Obituary Notice: Leone H. Vaughn

Leone H. Vaughn, 89, of Philipsburg died Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Windy Hill Village in Philipsburg.

Born Dec. 18, 1925 in RD Philipsburg, she was the daughter of the late Summerfield F. and Mary E. (Bair) Test.

She married Edwin L. Vaughn on July 7, 1945 in Philipsburg and who preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1998.

Mrs. Vaughn was a member of the New Life Center in Philipsburg.

She was first employed as a packer with the General Cigar Company in Philipsburg and then as a seamstress with the Charles Navasky & Co. in Philipsburg until her retirement.  She was a 1944 graduate of the Philipsburg High School.

Mrs. Vaughn’s maternal and paternal families have been instrumental during the formative years of the Philipsburg area.

The W.T. Bair family published the former Philipsburg Journal from 1888 until 1938 and founded the former Daily Journal, which was published from 1888 until 1977.

Her paternal great-grandfather, Jacob Test, opened Philipsburg’s first tannery in 1816, operated Philipsburg’s first tavern and was one of the financial contributors to the construction of the former Erie Pike.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Kathryn Hudak, Ruth Ashcroft, Isabel Williams, Mary Carr and Dorothy Patterson and three brothers, Lt. Col. Charles Test, Earl Test and Robert Test.  She was the last of her generation.

She is survived by one daughter, Ruth A. Tulwits and her husband, Robert G. of RD Philipsburg, and two sons, Jerry L. Vaughn and his wife, Kathryn and Robert L. “Bob” Vaughn and his wife, Patricia, both of Orange City, Fla.

She is survived by five grandchildren, Bryan D. Tulwits of Philipsburg and Rhonda J. (Vaughn) Poff, Michael R. Vaughn and his wife, Alisha, Matthew D. Vaughn and his wife, Kristy and Jeffrey A. Vaughn and his wife, Erica, all of Orange City, Fla., and six great-grandchildren, Tayler Poff, Brooke Poff, Kelsey Vaughn, Abigail Vaughn, Evan Vaughn and Morgan Perez, all of Orange City, Fla.  She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, 719 E. Spruce St., Philipsburg, with the Rev. John T. Dill officiating.  Burial will be at the Philipsburg Cemetery in Philipsburg.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
