Obituary Notice: William J. Slother Sr.

William J. Slother Sr., 91 of Philipsburg, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 at Windy Hill Village in Philipsburg.

He was the son of the late Michael and Annie (Tekely) Slother born June 21, 1922.  He married the former Dorothy Mae Hilderbrand on May 1, 1948 in Philipsburg; she preceded him in death on Dec. 2, 2005.

Mr. Slother was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Philipsburg and also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Moshannon Valley Council No. 2250 in Osceola Mills.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.  He accepted a commission from enlisted service in March of 1943 to attain the rank of First Lieutenant.  His service time during World War II included participating in the Allied invasion of France on D-Day.

He was employed as the branch manager for Clearfield Bank & Trust Co. in Philipsburg until his retirement in 1985.  He was a graduate of the Philipsburg High School and of the American Institute of Banking.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Slother was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Alex and Charles Slother and three sisters, Margaret Kundla, Katherine Dipko and Ramona Selfridge.

He is survived by a son, William J. Slother Jr. and his wife, Caroline of Hawk Run and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Philipsburg, with the Rev. Joseph Staszewiski, Celebrant.  Burial will be at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery, Philipsburg.

Friends will be received from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. Monday at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, 719 E. Spruce St., Philipsburg.

The Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Military honors will be accorded by the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.
