Obituary Notice: The Rev. Gerald T. Montgomery

The Rev. Gerald T. Montgomery, 87, of Treasure Lake, DuBois, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2016 at Penn Highlands DuBois.

Born Oct. 9, 1928 in Hazel Park, Mich., he was the son of the late William and Winnie (Simpson) Montgomery.

On Nov. 17, 1950, he married Delores V. (Moesta) Montgomery.  She survives.  They recently celebrated 65 years of marriage.

He was a Baptist pastor for 50 years, serving in Colorado, California and New Jersey.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in DuBois.  He enjoyed reading and going for walks in Treasure Lake.  He served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism for 45 years.

Rev. Montgomery is survived by three children,  the Rev. Mark Montgomery and his wife, Deborah of DuBois, Stephen Montgomery and his wife, Carol of Mount Laurel, NJ and Renee Roberts and her husband, Tim of Kokomo, Ind., nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Storey and Wilma McDuffy, and a brother, Harold Montgomery.

There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 at the First Baptist Church in DuBois with his son, Pastor Mark Montgomery and his grandson, Pastor Matthew Montgomery officiating.

A reception with light refreshments will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Burial is in Morningside Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, 197 Eastern Ave., DuBois, PA 15801.  The funds will be used for ABWE Missionary Appointee’s, Ben and Elizabeth DeLarme.

Michael J. “Mike” Reed, 63, of Clearfield, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 at Ridgeview Elder Care.

He was born July 18, 1952, the son of the late John and Mary (Richards) Reed. On Oct. 24, 1970, he married Susan (Guelich) Reed, who survives.

He retired from Clearfield Borough. He was a member of West Side United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir and the former chairmen of trustees. He was active with the Kitchen of Care Ministry.

He enjoyed weightlifting, riding motorcycles and target shooting with his son and grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Reed of Clearfield; his son, Travis J. Reed and his wife, Denise of Wilmington, Del.; and three grandchildren, Jamie (Denny) Coyle, Katie Guth and Shane Reed and a great-granddaughter, Henley Coyle, all of Wilmington, Del.

Mr. Reed is also survived by six siblings, Darleen Gruber, Marleen Stucke, Mark (Robin) Stucke, Frank (Maria) Stucke, Carrie (Tim) Sullivan and Bob (Cher) Stucke, all of the Buffalo area; a sister-in-law, Sherry (Boyd) Vokes of Curwensville; numerous nieces and nephews; and his bulldog, Maggie Mae.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at West Side United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Joleen A. Willis officiating.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday, at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home Inc.

Friends will also be received from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Lucille Butterbaugh, 92, of Tyrone and formerly of Osceola Mills, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 at Olivia Village in Tyrone.

Born Jan. 27, 1924 in Supply, NC, she was the daughter of the late Harvey T. and Lovie M. (Fulford) Varnam.

She married Franklin O. Butterbaugh on April 9, 1946 in Conway, SC. He preceded her in death on April 13, 1991.

Mrs. Butterbaugh was a member of the Coal Run Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Osceola Mills.

She was a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting, baking, camping, fishing and making dolls.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ophelia Lancaster and Buena Phelps and two brothers, Talmadge Varnam and Hodges Varnam.

Mrs. Butterbaugh is survived by two sons, Jessie Ordell Butterbaugh and his wife, JoAnne of Osceola Mills and Allen L. Butterbaugh and his wife, Frannie of South Philipsburg; a sister, Virginia Norton of Shallotte, NC; and a brother, Cortland Varnam and his wife, Bobby of Supply, NC.

She is survived by two grandchildren, Lovie Marie Butterbaugh-Cates of Osceola Mills and Franklin L. Butterbaugh and his wife, Billie Jo of Gaffney, SC and four great-grandchildren, Kayla and Kayden Cates and Ember and Allen Butterbaugh.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Osceola Mills, with the Rev. Hiram Westover officiating.  Burial will be at Umbria Cemetery in Osceola Mills.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Elizabeth “Betty” K. Eamigh Kupko Baronak, 92, of Clearfield died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 at her daughter, Carol Ferranti’s residence of Country Club Circle, Clearfield.

She was born Feb. 27, 1923 in Irvona, a daughter of the late John L. and Elizabeth (Drew) Eamigh.

Mrs. Baronak was a 1940 graduate of the Clearfield High School. She worked for the Progressive Publishing Company (The Progress) as a typesetter for 47 years until her retirement in 2001.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Clearfield.

Mrs. Baronak is survived by a daughter, Carol (Kupko) Ferranti of Clearfield; a sister, Sylvia Bunzer of Morrisdale; a brother, William Eamigh and his wife, Sue of Westerville, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, T./Sgt., Michael P. Kupko, to whom she was married Nov. 15, 1941 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Clearfield and whom died March 23, 1944; and her husband of 57 years, Adam Baronak, to whom she was married Oct. 20, 1945 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Clearfield and whom died Feb. 28, 2003.

She was also preceded in death by a son, William J. Baronak, who died July 28, 2010; a son-in-law, Richard T. Ferranti; a brother, John L. Eamigh; a sister-in-law, Viola Eamigh; a brother-in-law, Joe Bunzer; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. Robert Stump officiating. Burial will be at Crown Crest Memorial Park.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. There will be an additional hour of calling from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 121 S. Second St., Clearfield, PA 16830.

Obituary Notice: Donald D. “Trigger” Bloom

Donald Dwight “Trigger” Bloom, 86, of Dubois and formerly of Curwensville and Clearfield, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 at the Dubois Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 19, 1929 in Curwensville, he was the son of Alvin Chester and Margaret Jean (Pifer) Bloom.

He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.  He graduated from the Pennsylvania State Teacher’s College of Indiana, Pa. in April of 1955.

He worked for Kurtz Bros. as a foreman and superintendent and retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he was a rural mail carrier for 16 years.

He was a life member of Curwensville American Legion and the Clearfield Moose. He was a former member of Curwensville Lions Club, the Clearfield-Curwensville Country Club, the Eagles Ridge Golf Club and the B.P.O.E. No. 540 Elks in Clearfield.

On Aug. 6, 1960 in Curwensville, he wed K. Lorraine Valimont, who survives of DuBois. He is also survived by a brother, C. Eugene Bloom of Arkansas and Janet Lynn Carter and her husband, James of Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

At the request of Mr. Bloom, there will be no public services. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Crown Crest Memorial Park.

Maricel M. Gonzalez, 37, of Warner Robins, Ga., died Monday, Jan. 25, 2016 at the Houston Health Care in Warner Robins, Ga.

Born Dec. 11, 1978 in Manila, Philippines, she was the daughter of Victor and Elsie (Divina) Mailom of Manila, Philippines.

She married Jeffrey L. Gonzalez on June 20, 2005 in Caloocan, Philippines. He survives at home.

Mrs. Gonzalez was of the Roman Catholic faith.  She was a homemaker.

She graduated from high school and earned her Bachelor’s degree in business marketing.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sophia Chelsyann Mailom Gonzalez.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is survived by a daughter, Gwyneth Mailom Gonzalez, who lives at home, and a sister, Ana Vicel M. Rivera of Manila, Philippines.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osceola Mills with the Rev. Father Joseph P. Staszewski officiating.

Burial will be at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Osceola Mills.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Osceola Mills.

Joan A. Coudriet, 75, of Kylertown died Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 at Clearfield Penn Highlands Hospital.

She was born Aug. 31, 1940 the daughter of the late Theodore and Ruth Shields Carlson.

Mrs. Coudriet was a member of the Gethsemane United Methodist Church, Allport.

She was a 1958 graduate of the Cooper Township High School. She’d worked for Halls IGA, Snowshoe, for a number of years.

She was a homemaker.

She was married to Ernest Thomas Coudriet, who preceded her in death on June 26, 2015.

Mrs. Coudriet is survived by two sons, Matthew T. Coudriet and his wife, Colleen of DuBois and Mark A. Coudriet and his wife, Dee of Grassflat and her three grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary and Bethany.

She is also survived by a sister, Doris Carlson of Kylertown and a brother, Harold Carlson and his wife, Kathryn of Kylertown.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, William and Robert Carlson.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Gethsemane United Methodist Church, Allport, with the Rev. James Hollister officiating. Burial will be in the Allport Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Marie Laman, 95, DuBois died Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 at Christ the King Manor.

Born Oct. 15, 1920 in Chestnut Grove, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Olive (Hartzfeld) Smith.

On Sept. 30, 1943, she married Paul D. Laman.  He preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 2004.

Mrs. Laman was a graduate of Brady Township High School and the DuBois Business College.

She was a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.

She is survived by three children, Dr. David Laman and his wife, Verna of Pittsburgh, Linda Ream and her husband, Peter of Sewickley and Kathleen Greene and her husband, Martin of Hollywood, Fla.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Laman was preceded in death by her brother, James C. Smith and her sister, Marjorie Lois LaCaille.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Burial is in St. Catherine’s Cemetery.

Obituary Notice: Henry B. “Hank” Swoope IV

Henry B. “Hank” Swoope IV, 74, of Madera died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 in Sunrise Assisted Living, Alexandria, Va.

Born Jan. 27, 1942 in Clearfield, he was the son of the late William I. Swoope and Anne G. Swoope.

He married Agnes Jane (Hawkins) on Oct. 20, 1963. She preceded him in death in 1999.

He is survived by one son, Henry B. “H.B.” Swoope V and his wife, Rachel of Alexandria, Va.; one daughter, Penny Collins of Pittsburgh; five grandchildren, Henry B. Swoope VI, Jane Swoope, Graham Swoope, Amanda Reinecke and Rachel Reinecke; and his brothers, William I. Swoope III, Frank Swoope and Thomas “Tim” Swoope.

Mr. Swoope attended Mercersburg Academy and Madera High School.  He graduated from George Washington University with a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

After graduation, he began a career in the science and microbiology industries, spanning three decades. He started with Scientific Products in 1965 and then Mallinckrodt through the 1970’s.

In 1982, he was named senior vice president of sales and marketing for Baltimore Biological Laboratories (BBL), a subsidiary of 120-year-old healthcare giant Becton Dickinson.  Through the 1990’s, he worked on numerous start-up ventures.  From 2003-2013, he worked as general manager for Precision Mechanical Inc. of Winchester, Ky.

In 2013, Mr. Swoope retired to Madera to stay active in his primary passions, serving as president for the family businesses, Mid-Pen Coal and Middle Pennsylvania Coal Company and as treasurer for Madera Presbyterian Church and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren.  In his spare time, he enjoyed golf, tennis, racquetball and spending time with his family at the beach.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kruise-Spewock Funeral & Cremation Services Inc., Madera.  Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Madera Presbyterian Church with Pastor Carl Bittner officiating.  Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Curwensville.

Mason Lee Wazelle, 19, of Bradford and formerly of Lumber City, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY.

Born Oct. 25, 1996 in Bradford, he was the son of Jessica Wazelle and Richard Roach. He was employed as a cook for the Lighthouse Restaurant in Bradford.

Surviving are his mother and her companion, Travis Allen of Lumber City; his father of Bradford; two brothers, Jacob Wazelle and Seth Wazelle, both of Lumber City; and a sister, Brianna Wazelle of Lumber City.

Also surviving are his paternal grandmother, Sandy Dinge of Knoxdale; his paternal grandparents, Mary and Jerry Roach of Bradford; and his girlfriend, Ashley Colosimo of Bradford.

There will be no public visitation, and private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Ronald Biddle officiating.

William D. Maines, 67, of Clearfield died Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 at Penn Highlands DuBois.

He was born Nov. 10, 1948 in North East, a son of the late Bruce and Robina (Hering) Maines.

Mr. Maines proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1966-1970. During this time, he was a MedVac pilot and earned a Bronze Star.

After his service with the U.S. Navy, Mr. Maines was employed by the U.S. Marshals as a special agent.

He was a life-time member of the Clearfield VFW and a member of the Clearfield American Legion.

He is survived by his siblings, Bruce Maines, Patrick Maines and his wife, Brenda, David Maines and Beverly I. McCuster and a cousin, Ron Fenton of Clearfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Calvin Maines and a sister, Sandra Lee Maines.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Clearfield American Legion with military honors accorded by the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Honor Guards.

Loren D. Bishop, 63, of Treasure Lake, DuBois, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family.

Born Dec. 26, 1952 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Robert and Rachel Bishop.

On April 19, 1975, he married Patricia M. “Pat” (Pacelli) Bishop.  She survives.

Recently, he retired from SKF Aerospace as an Eastern Regional sales manager.

He was a member of the Treasure Lake Sportsmen’s Club and a past board member of the Clearfield-Jefferson County Regional Airport Authority. He was also a past member of the Lions Club.

He started the “Us TOO” Prostate Cancer Support Group at Penn Highlands DuBois.

He is survived by three children, Ian Bishop and his wife, Gina and Sean Bishop and his wife, Shelley, both of Pittsburgh, and Stephanie Reinsel and her husband, Douglas of DuBois.

He is survived by eight grandchildren, Cooper, Parker, Vivian and Brody Bishop; Ryan and AJ Reinsel; and Grace and Eva Bishop.  He is also survived by a brother, R. Scott Bishop of South Carolina.

At his request, there will be no public visitation and private funeral services will be held.

However, a celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at the DuBois Country Club.  All are welcome to attend.

James S. Mills, 69, of Glass City, Philipsburg, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2016 at the Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.

He was born in Philipsburg on Oct. 17, 1946, a son of the late Dr. George W. and Margaret H. (Richards) Mills of Houtzdale.

Mr. Mills grew up in Houtzdale and was formerly a member of the Houtzdale First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Mills was a 1964 graduate of the Moshannon Valley High School, where he participated in football and basketball.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.

Throughout his life, Mr. Mills was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was instrumental in the organization of the Wood Duck Chapter of Trout Unlimited, where he was a past president, and the operation of the fish hatchery.

He was also a long-standing member of his family’s Houtzdale Hunting Club and the Elks Country Club of Philipsburg.

He had been employed with True Value Hardware in Philipsburg, State Equipment of Chester Hill and finally as a supervisor with Anderson Equipment until his retirement in 2011.

On Dec. 26, 1982 in Greenville, SC, he married the former Barbara Morrison, who survives at home.

Also surviving are his daughter, Amy Plummer and her husband, Marvin and his grandson, Maxwell James Plummer, all of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two brothers, George Mills and his wife, Eva Lynn of Mechanicsburg and Paul Scott Mills and his wife, Cindy of Osceola Mills; a nephew, Dr. Steven E. Mills and family of Latrobe; a niece, Meredith A. Mills, Esquire, of Washington, D.C.; and an aunt, Nancy Hummel and her husband, William of Morrisdale. Numerous friends and relatives here and in the Harrisburg area also share in his passing.

Friends and family are invited to participate in a service of remembrance from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, Philipsburg. Burial will follow at the I.0.0.F. Cemetery, Brisbin.

Ethel Mae Norris, 95, a resident of the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clearfield and formerly of Olanta, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016 at the center.

Born Aug. 9, 1920 in Big Run, she was the daughter of Jacob Earl and Gertrude R. (Kelly) Hineman. Mrs. Norris was a homemaker.

She also had worked for the former Kent’s Sportswear in Curwensville for 16.5 years and for the former Clearfield Furs for seven months.  She was a member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church of Olanta.

On Feb. 8, 1941 in Punxsutawney, she wed Reuben Albert Norris Sr., who preceded her in death on March 31, 2004.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two great-grandchildren, Chloee Norris and Jason Norris Jr.; a sister, Grace Rasely; and a brother, George Hineman.  She was the last member of her generation.

Surviving are two children, Reuben Albert Norris Jr. and his wife, Kathryn and G. Jean Collins and her husband, H. Colin, both of Clearfield; three grandchildren, Kelly (Collins) Wallace, Casey Collins and Jason Norris; four great-grandchildren, Sierra Collins, Haylee Collins, Adan Wallace and Casandra Norris; and a great-great-granddaughter, Kyrra Lea Schlindwein.

Funeral services for Mrs. Norris will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville with the Rev. Samuel Maines officiating. Burial will be in the Bloomington Cemetery Curwensville.

Obituary Notice: Thomas L. Anderson

Thomas L. Anderson, 94, of DuBois died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016 at the DuBois Nursing Home.

Born May 3, 1921 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Thomas A. and Irene (Langford) Anderson.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy as a signalman during World War II in the European Theatre.

On June 1, 1946, he married Dorothy S. (Watt) Anderson.  She preceded him in death in December of 2009.

He retired as treasurer of Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad after 43 years of service, a subsidiary of the U.S. Steel Corp.

He was a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Bessemer System Federal Credit Union.  He was also an avid golfer and bowler.

He is survived by a son, Thomas L. Anderson Jr. and his wife, Linda of DuBois; three grandchildren, Michele Joseph and her husband, David, Tracie Shannon and her husband, Dennis and Aimee Megargee and her husband, Michael; and five great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Logan Shannon, Emily Joseph and Elizabeth and Alexis Megargee.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Albert, Margaret, Lawrence, Mary and Robert.

Friends will be received from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Sunday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home with Pastor Terry Felt officiating.

Full military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard from the funeral home.

Burial will be in Jefferson Memorial Park in Pittsburgh.

Obituary Notice: Steven Craig “Grubber” Drury

Steven Craig “Grubber” Drury, 65, of Philipsburg died Monday, Feb. 1, 2016 at Windy Hill Village, P.S.L., Philipsburg.

He was born May 3, 1950, a son of the late Stanley W. Drury and Margaret (Gearhart) Drury Marshall.

Mr. Drury was a multitalented musician and performed with a number of bands. He also served in the U.S. Navy.

He was formerly employed as a laborer with a number of construction and landscaping companies.

He was a 1968 graduate of the Philipsburg-Osceola Area High School.

He was married to the former Ann Kay Wilson, who preceded him in death on Feb. 21, 2013.

Surviving are a sister, Amanda D. Panasiti and her husband, Scott of Black Moshannon, RD Philipsburg; two brothers, Clifford A. “Peavy” Drury and his wife, Cathy of Altoona and David H. Drury and his wife, Dawn of Duncannon.

Also surviving are a nephew, Andrew Drury and his wife, Cathy and grand-nephew, Ryan, all of St. Louis, MO; a niece, Julie Drury of Gambrills, Md.; and a nephew, David Drury of Duncannon.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no public visitation. Burial will be at Philipsburg Cemetery, Philipsburg.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the resident’s activity fund at Windy Hill Village, 100 Dogwood Dr., Philipsburg, PA 16866

Eugene A. ‘Gene’ Johnston, 67, of Curwensville died after a courageous battle against cancer on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016. He died at his home with his wife at his side.

He was born Aug. 31, 1948 in Philipsburg, a son of the late Woodrow A. and Helen E. (Cruikshank) Johnston.

After graduating high school, he went to work for Michael Baker Construction in Rochester before being drafted in the U.S. Army to serve during the Vietnam Era.

Upon his honorable discharge and being awarded the Bronze Medal for his service, he worked at Green Construction Co., helping build the Raystown Lake Dam.

He had also been employed by Amos L. Dolby Explosive Co. in Clarion and the D.C. Guelich Explosive Co. in Clearfield. He then began his employment with Penelec, Clearfield, and retired in 2012 after 34 years of service as a lineman.

He had an incredible work ethic; however, he will be remembered by family and friends for enjoying his afternoon naps when he had the chance.
He was affiliated with the Curwensville Presbyterian Church and a life member of the Curwensville Rescue Hose & Ladder Company.

In his younger years, he belonged to the Curwensville Fire Police. He was also on the board of the Curwensville Ambulance Association.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia ‘Patty’ (Leonard) Johnston, to whom he was wed Sept. 21, 1974 in St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, Grampian.

He is also survived by a son, Cory Kenneth Johnston and his wife, Devon of Clearfield; three granddaughters, Eloise Anne, Dinah Jean and Audra Joy Johnston; his grand-dog ‘Boo’; two aunts, Thelma ‘Taffy’ Cruikshank of California and Donna Tubbs of Luthersburg; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Duffalo of DuBois and Louise Delio of Falls Creek; three brothers-in-law, John Leonard, Tom Leonard and Steve Leonard and his wife, Janice, all of Curwensville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth A. Johnston.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Kevin A Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield, with Pastor Daniel Osterhout officiating. Burial will follow in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the members of the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Honor Guard.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Obituary Notice: Charles D. Walker

Charles Darrah “Pappy” Walker, 81, of Clearfield went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016 at Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital with his family at his side.

Born Jan. 30, 1935, he was the son of Raymond and Ruth (Ritzen) Walker.

He was a 1955 graduate of Clearfield High School and served his country as both active duty and reservist in the U.S. Navy with the rank of QMSN.

He had worked for the former A&P grocery stores in both Emporium and Clearfield, the Clearfield Hospital, the former Acme Market in Clearfield and the former Riverside Markets in Clearfield.

He was a former Pike Township Supervisor and retired from the Sky Haven Coal Co.

He attended and was a member of the Clearfield Alliance Church where he helped in several areas of ministry.  He was also an avid outdoorsman and a member of the Dry Hollow Hunting Camp, where he served as treasurer and camp steward for many years.

He also enjoyed working with his brother-in-law, John Smeal on special projects and participated in the Silver Sneakers Program.  He loved his family and friends and in his own way made sure each person knew how special they were to him.

On June 12, 1955, he wed the former Patricia Ann Smeal, who survives along with three children, Deb Thompson and her husband, Joe of Morrisdale, Tim Walker and his wife, Donna of Woodland and Tom Walker and his wife, Wanda of Clearfield.

He is also survived by six grandchildren, Andy Shaffer and his wife Melissa, Christina Iraca and her husband, Christion, Eric Walker, Mark Walker and his wife, Allison, Thomas Walker Jr. and his wife, Kacey and Micah Walker.

Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Hudson Walker and Anna Iraca; two step-grandchildren, JoAnne Thompson and Joy Thompson; five step great-grandchildren, Gage, Ethan, Paityn, Trista and Airan; as well as a brother, John Walker of Homer City and a sister, Jean McCall of Greenville, RD Grampian.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Clearfield Alliance Church with Pastor Robert Goldenberg officiating.

Friends will be received from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Betty Z. Wise, 92, of Curwensville went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 at her home.

She was born Sept. 24, 1923 in Lumber City, a daughter of the late Charles A. and Virgie (Barrett) Straw.

Mrs. Wise was employed at J.C. Penney in Altoona before moving to Curwensville. She was a member of the Curwensville Alliance Church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Wise, to whom she was wed Nov. 25, 1967 in Altoona.

She is survived by six children, Craig Litz and his wife, Janice and Edward Lee Litz and his wife, Carol, both of Curwensville; Jerry Litz and his wife, Susan of Louisville, Ky.; Robert D. ‘Beau’ Litz and his wife, Jeanne of Mahaffey; Paulette Lowe and her husband, Darold of Milroy; and Janet McGarry and her husband, Timothy of DuBois.

Mrs. Wise is also survived by two step-sons, Robert L. Wise Jr. and his wife, Sandra of Johnstown and Todd Wise of Virginia Beach, Va.; 22 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Beverly DeLeon of Topeka, KS; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul A. Litz in 1973; a grandson, Bradley E. Litz; a great-grandson, Brandon Alexander; a brother, James Straw; and a sister, Margaret ‘Peggy’ Straw Ricotta.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Curwensville Alliance Church with the Rev. Stephen D. Shields officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Curwensville.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Curwensville Alliance Church.

Ann M. Zaffuto, 89, of DuBois and formerly of Sykesville, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 at Christ the King Manor.

She was born Sept. 21, 1926 in Anita, the daughter of the late Carmelo and Gaetana “Tillie” (Vitello)  Zaffuto.

She was a homemaker. She had worked as a clerk for Horne’s Department Store in Pittsburgh and in the Zaffuto Market in Sykesville.

She was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Sykesville. She was a member of the Rosary Society and active in church functions.

She enjoyed sewing.  She loved her family and dotting on her nieces and nephews.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Tillie Zaffuto, Stella London, Lillian Murdock and two brothers, Samuel and Anthony Zaffuto.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Christ the King Manor.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Christ the King Manor with Msgr. H. Desmond McGee as celebrant.

Burial will follow in the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cemetery, Sykesville.

Memorials may be sent to Christ the King Manor, 1100 W. Long Ave., DuBois, PA 15801.
