Evelyn M. Simbeck, 87, of DuBois died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018 at the home of her daughter.

Born Aug. 29, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Bertha (Mehok) Kartavich.

On July 4, 1964, she married Joseph R. Simbeck.  He preceded her in death Aug. 7, 2004.

She was a homemaker and had worked at JJ Newberry for more than 15 years.

She was a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church.  She enjoyed reading, attending community concerts and loved to go to the DuBois Public Library. She also liked to watch NBA basketball and loved her Pittsburgh Pirates.

She is survived by two children, Joseph E. Simbeck and his wife, Kelly and Mary R. Carlson and her husband, Tim, both of DuBois; a sister, Sister Rita Kartavich, RSM of Erie; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Johnston and an infant brother, Frank Kartavich.

There will be no public visitation.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Siefer as celebrant.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Memorials may be place with the DuBois Public Library, 31 S. Brady St., DuBois, PA 15801.

Oliver R. “Pete” Smeal, 94, of Philipsburg and formerly of Gearhartville, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018 in Philipsburg.

Born Aug. 5, 1923 in South Philipsburg, he was a son of the late Roland and Bertha Mae (Fleck) Smeal.

He was a life-long member of Calvary United Methodist Church, West Decatur, where he was a very active volunteer, a former Sunday school superintendent and a member of the board of trustees.

He also sang in the men’s chorus and men’s quartet. He was a former member of the Philipsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Louis P. Jenkins Post 3450 and a volunteer for Boy Scout Troop 43.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II in Africa and Italy. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, Service Medal with four Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal.

He was a truck driver for his uncle’s coal business and then spent 35 years working for Harbison Walker and Glen-Gery from which he retired. He will be remembered for his big smile and sense of humor.

On April 21, 1946 at the former United Brethren Church (now Grace United Methodist Church), he married Dorothiea C. “Dot” (Jackson) Smeal, who survives at home.

Surviving are three daughters, Cheri Verbeck and her husband, Robert of South Philipsburg, Nancy Fetters of Glen Hope and Debbie Johnston of Madera and a son, Joseph R. Smeal and his wife, Michele of South Carolina.

Also surviving are three sisters, Betty Fry of Philipsburg, Eleanor Jane Bryan of West Decatur and Linda Pelton and her husband, Thomas of Morrisdale; a brother, Edward Smeal and his wife, Anna Mae of Houtzdale; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Roy “Jim” and George “Dick;” a sister, Margaret; and a great-grandson, Torin Verbeck.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 167 Blue Ball Rd., West Decatur, with Pastor Sarah Kim officiating.

Full military honors will be conducted at the church by members of the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard. Burial will be at Mock’s Hill Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Monday prior to the service at the church.

James William “Brady Bill” Clark, 92, a resident of Laurel Brooke Landing Personal Care Residence in Brookville, and formerly of Colorado and Grampian, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018 at Laurel Brooke Landing.

Born Feb. 22, 1925 Grampian, he was the son of Joseph William and Mary Jane (Rafferty) Clark.

Mr. Clark was retired as a mason after having spent the majority of his working career in Colorado.

He was a member of the St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church where as a young boy served on the altar.

He had served with the U.S. Army during World War II and the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially going to camp.

On Nov. 20, 1958 at St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church in Ravenna, Ohio, he wed the former Irene Rose Cartwright, who preceded him in death July 7, 2007.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Ann Heidt, Margaret Schurr, Kathryn Diehl and Ethel Wood.  He was the last member of his generation.

Surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church in Grampian, with the Rev. Father L. Stephen Collins as celebrant.

Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Grampian.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville and again from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. Monday, at which time the procession will depart for the church.

The Rosary will be recited by members of the St. Theresa’s Guild at 1:45 p.m. A Scripture Vigil will be conducted by Deacon Tony Indelicato at 4:30 p.m. Both will be Sunday at the funeral home.

Leroy L. Graham, 38, of Curwensville died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018 at Penn Highlands Clearfield.

Born Dec. 14, 1979 in Clearfield, he was the son of Kerry L. Graham of Curwensville and Phyllis L. (Dixon) Daugherty of Olanta.

He was employed at Appalachian Wood in Clearfield. He obtained his GED and was passionate about cooking and science. He loved his family.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Daniel Graham and one grandfather, Leroy Dixon.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by the love of his life, Jessica MacLachlan at home.

He is survived by three daughters, Oliviah H. Graham and Mariah Baker, both at home, and Atalia Graham of Texas and four sons, Jeremiah Graham, Noah Baker and Isaiah Baker, all at home, and Kaleb Graham of Texas.

He is survived by one step-sister, Victoria L. Foltz and her husband, Nate of Philipsburg; two brothers, Kerry L. Graham of West Decatur and Nicholas J. Daugherty of Olanta; and one step-brother, Lee Daugherty of State College.

He is also survived by his step-father, Leon Daugherty of Olanta and grandparents, Charlotte Dixon of Houtzdale and Paul and Joan Daugherty of Philipsburg.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ohio Community Building, RD Osceola Mills, with Pastor Roy Hampton officiating.

William Tokarchick, 59, of Beccaria died Friday, Jan. 26, 2018 at his residence.

Born Aug. 18, 1958 in Philipsburg, he was the son of the late Steve and Arleen (Moseley) Tokarchick

He was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked as a truck driver and corrections officer. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

On Oct. 5, 1985 in Winchester, Va., he married Judith O’Donnell, who survives at the home.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Linda (Leroy) Dreibelbis of Pennsylvania Furnace and Ellen Tokarchick of Belsena Mills; a step-son, Chris Dunsmore of Beaver Valley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services and burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Edward J. Hanslovan Sr., 84, of Allport Cutoff, Morrisdale, died at his residence Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018.

Born March 29, 1933, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Bunyak) Hanslovan, of Grassflat.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

On June 4, 1955, he wed Mary E. Albert, who survives at home.

“Ed” or “Pepper” – as many knew him – was the owner/operator of Ed Hanslovan Coal Co., Inc.  He was the most family-dedicated and hardest working person we knew.

He enjoyed working, hunting, fishing, golfing, cutting word and cutting grass for his nearby children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (Bunyak) Hanslovan of Grassflat; one daughter, Maribeth (Hanslovan) Seger and one son, Edward J Hanslovan Jr., both of whom were from Morrisdale; and one granddaughter, Jill Leeann Smith.

He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 63 years who provided the best, most loving care a person could ever have received.

He is survived by four daughters, Maria Davic of Grafton, Ohio and Sharon Smith and her spouse, Randy, Lori Hanslovan and Tracy Pennington and her spouse, Dave, all of Morrisdale, and one son, Mark Hanslovan and his spouse, Ronda of Morrisdale.

He is survived by the families of his deceased children, Edward J. Hanslovan Jr. and Maribeth (Hanslovan) Seger. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A private celebration of life memorial service will be held at the family’s earliest convenience.

In lieu of flowers, monetary donations may be made to the Children’s Aid Society, 1008 S. Second St., Clearfield, PA  16830.

Shirley J. Depalma, 74, of Philipsburg died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018 at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College.

Born Nov. 23, 1943 in Temple, Texas, she was the daughter of Chester I and Margaret Jean (Dahlin) Johnson. She was Protestant by faith.

She was a 1961 graduate of the Moshannon Valley High School. She was also a graduate of the Altoona School of Commerce.

She taught Sunday school, was the Sunday school pianist and sang in the church choir. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Nittany Lion Club and the Penn State Alumni Association.

She was employed at Penn State University in the Office of the President from 1964 until 2001 during the terms of Eric Walker, John Oswalt, Bryce Jordan, Joab Thomas and Graham Spanier.

She first married Stuart R Woods, who preceded her in death in 1983. She later married Angelo Depalma, who survives in Allport.

Surviving are two sisters, Sandra (Francis) Zapsky of Madera and Barbara Dinant and her companion, Jack Luster of Philipsburg; two nephews, Scott (Stephine) Dinant of Charlestown, W.Va., and Zachary Zapsky of Madera; and a great-nephew, Ryan Dinant.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale, with Pastor John Dill officiating.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the I.O.O. F. Cemetery, Brisbin.

Bernice M. Chileski, 90, of Falls Creek died Friday, Jan. 26, 2018 at Christ the King Manor.

Born March 14, 1927 in Shinnston, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Schepp) Chileski.

She retired from the A&P Supermarket in DuBois after many years of service.  She was also a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church

She is survived by two sisters, Irene Kendrick of Naples, Fla., and Evelyn Chileski of Pittsburgh.

Friends will be received from 8:30 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium Inc.

Florence E. Wilson, 99, of Treasure Lake, DuBois died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.

Born July 11, 1918 in Brockton, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Ray and Edith (Hancock) Porter.

She attended Simmons College for Women in Boston, Mass.

She was married to Herbert Straffin. He preceded her in death. She then married John C. Wilson. He preceded her in death, as well.

She retired as a civil service worker from the Defense Supply Agency in Philadelphia.

She was a member of the Treasure Lake Church and the Red Hat Society. She also volunteered as a library aide for many years.

She is survived by a son, Mark Straffin and his wife, Carol of DuBois, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Iva Jean Bush Twoey, 82, of Ridgeview Eldercare in Curwensville and formerly of Osceola Mills, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 at Penn Highlands, DuBois.

Born April 13, 1935 in Osceola Mills, she was the daughter of the late Linden and Beatrice (Smeal) Bush.

She was of the Christian faith and a retired nursing assistant.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, James M. Twoey; one son, John Twoey; one grandson, Jared Dullen; seven sisters, Irene Poorman, Dolly Bush, Ollie Merrell, Elpha Kanouff, Margie Montie, Lorraine O’Harrow and Freda Sankey; and three brothers, Arthur, Dwain and Doyle Bush.

She is survived by two daughters, Eleanor Dullen of Clearfield and Ollie Condon of Osceola Mills; two sons, James A. Twoey and his wife, Charlene of Philipsburg and Douglas D. Twoey and his wife, Joyce of Osceola Mills; two sisters, Rexine Twoey and her husband, Frank of Florida and Nancy Twoey of Niagara Falls, NY; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services LLC in Osceola Mills, with Pastor Darl Ware and Pastor William Crawford co-officiating.

Burial will be at the Umbria Cemetery in Osceola Mills.

William R. “Bob” Kay, 94, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield.

Born Nov. 23, 1923 in Hawk Run, he was the son of the late Robert and Mary (Daley) Kay.

On Sept. 6, 1952, he married Mary Garnet Harpst in Spring Mills, Pa. She survives at home.

He was a graduate of the Philipsburg High School and Lock Haven University.  He was a teacher for the Moshannon Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola school districts.  He retired in 1981.

In addition to his wife, he will be deeply missed by a daughter, Cheryl Marsayda of Hazel Township Pa.; three sons, Gregory and Forrest Kay, both of Osceola Mills, and Brett Kay of York Haven, Pa.; and three sisters, Peggy Scottson of Chester Hill and Dorothy Perks and Nancy Knacht, both of Philipsburg.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Alexandra, Benjamin, Michael, Shantelle, Gregory, Shawn and Hunter; three great-grandchildren, Michael, Aislynne and Anthony; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Helen Connors and a brother, Richard Kay.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dahlgren-Spewock Funeral Home Inc., 228 N. Centre St., Philipsburg, with Pastor Elizabeth Stutler officiating.

Catherine Ann Dotts McDowell, 87, of Clearfield died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 at her home.  She was born Oct. 20, 1930 in Reynoldsville, a daughter of the late Nick and Catherine (Bradenbaugh) Fusco.

She was a graduate from the Reynoldsville High in the class of 1948.

Then, she studied in Philadelphia and came to work at the Clearfield Hospital. She retired after more than 40 years of service.

She was very active in The Presbyterian Church, Clearfield, where she was a deacon for some time.

She was also an avid reader with a love of crossword puzzles, as well as a long-time Steelers and Nittany Lion fan.

She spent her retirement years traveling to visit kids and grandkids and really enjoying those trips throughout her later life.

She volunteered many years with the American Cancer Society and with the Bloodmobile.

She is survived by six children, Karen Auman, Jeff McDowell, Kelly McDowell, Mark McDowell, Brad McDowell and Craig McDowell; 16 grandchildren; some great-grandchildren; a brother, Nick Fusco; a niece, Kelly Fusco; and many cousins and bunches of friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield, with the Rev. Jimmy Hopper officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mount Joy Cemetery, Clearfield.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Ellis Clair Miller, 69, of Curwensville died Monday, Jan. 29, 2018 at the Ridgeview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Curwensville after a lengthy illness.

Born Nov. 26, 1948 in Clearfield, he was the son of Russell and Helen (Keller) Miller.

Mr. Miller was retired from the Tractor Supply Co., as a sales associate. He attended the Curwensville Alliance Church.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Glen Richey Sportsmen’s Association, and he loved to hunt and fish.

Surviving are a sister, Lois I. Miller of Curwensville as well as 12 cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Curwensville Alliance Church, Susquehanna Avenue, Curwensville, with the Rev. Stephen D. Shields officiating.  Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery Curwensville.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville and again from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Military honors will be accorded at the church by members of the Clearfield Honor Guard.

Stanley Berzonsky, 96, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018 at Summa-Barberton Hospital in Barberton, Ohio.

Born Aug. 17, 1921 in Fernwood, he was the son of the late Wasyl and Fenia (Pohlid) Berzonsky.

He was a 1940 graduate of the Madera High School, and he attended DuBois Business College.

He owned and operated a gas station. He was the Gulich Township tax collector, and he also worked for many years as a bookkeeper in the coal industry.

He enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. He also enjoyed family parties, especially the ice cream cake.

He was a kind man who loved people. He was an exceptional storyteller, sharing what life was like when he was growing up.

“Uncle Stan,” as known by his nephews, never missed an opportunity to spend time with them. He took them to Pirates games or down to watch the cherry blossoms bloom.

He was also an integral part in the lives of his great-nieces and great-nephews.

He will be deeply missed by two sisters, Ann Petrovich of Virginia and Mary Magensky of Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight brothers, Frank, Harry, George, Metro, Michael, Pete, Samuel and John Berzonsky.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kruise-Spewock Funeral & Cremation Services Inc., Ramey.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the St Vladimir Orthodox Church, Janesville.  Father George Hnatko will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Robert J. “Bob” Roxby Sr., 71, of RD Philipsburg, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 12, 1946 in Philipsburg, a son of Arthur T. Roxby Sr. and E. June (Price) Roxby, both of whom preceded him in death.

He was a 1964 graduate of the Philipsburg-Osceola Area High School. He was a 1971 graduate of California University (Pa.) with a Bachelor of Arts in English literature and communications.

He was employed throughout his teaching career with the West Branch Area High School.

He initially taught junior high English and then moved to senior high English for the majority of his tenure at the school until his retirement in 2000.

He also served as a former wrestling and drama coach for the school.

He was married July 6, 1968, in Philipsburg to the former Patricia “Patti” L. (Frye), who survives at home.

He is also survived by one son, Robert J. Roxby Jr. of Philipsburg; one brother, the Rev. Arthur T. Roxby Jr. and his wife, the Rev. Irene Roxby of Philipsburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.

There will be no public visitation. Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family.

Barbara L. Nagy, 69, of Clearfield died Monday, Jan. 29, 2018 at UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh.

She was born Dec. 23, 1948, the daughter of Henry D. Bloom and Ruth L. (Ott) Bloom.

Ms. Nagy worked at Harbison Walker and Butler Trucking as an office clerk.

She was a member of the Kerr Addition United Methodist Church, where she was part of the United Methodist Women, Christians Who Care and a past membership secretary.

Additionally, she was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and March of Dimes.

She’s survived by her mother, Ruth Bloom of Clearfield; three aunts, Myra Peters and her husband, Rodney of West Decatur, Ann Ott of Curwensville and Nancy Ott of Luthersburg; and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father; her grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home Inc. with Pastor Mark Brower officiating.

Friends and family are invited to the funeral home from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday.

Elaine M. Weichman, 79, of DuBois died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018 at Christ the King Manor in DuBois.

Born Aug. 14, 1938 in Erie, she was the daughter of the late William and Anna (Zimmerman) Alloway.

On Aug. 6, 1960, she married Richard L. “Dick” Weichman. He survives.

She retired from the Material Management Department at the DuBois Regional Medical Center. She also worked at the Penn Traffic Warehouse for 18 years.

She was a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church. She also volunteered for Penn Highlands Hospice for many years making memory bears.

She is survived by five children, Jan Sedor and her husband, Jeff of DuBois, Jeff Weichman and his wife, Joy Sue of Glencoe, Ala., Joy Kepple and her husband, Ken of Treasure Lake, Jon Weichman and his wife, Shelley of Homosassa, Fla., and Jackie Hartzell and her husband, Jeff of Brookville; three brothers, William Alloway and his wife, Margie of Erie, Arnold Alloway and his wife, Judy of Madeira Beach, Fla., and Norman Alloway and his wife, Doreen of Shalotte, NC; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium Inc.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Siefer as celebrant. Burial will be at Morningside Cemetery.

Wayne L. Ellenberger, 70, formerly of Luthersburg, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2018 at the Heritage Valley Sewickley Hospital in Sewickley, Pa.

Born March 5, 1947 in DuBois, he was the son of the late Clem and Hope (Seyler) Ellenberger.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy who served on the USS O’Hara during the Vietnam War.

He was a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University. He retired as a truck driver.

He was a member of the America Legion and the Forest Grove Sportsmen’s Association. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was a musician in the Ellenberger Family Band for more than 15 years.

He is survived by a brother, James L. Ellenberger and his wife, Carol of Coraopolis, Pa.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Budd Ellenberger.

Private funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018 with Pastor Rick Howe officiating. Burial will be in Luthersburg Union Cemetery.

Ida E. Bowman, 83, of Clearfield went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018 at Ridgeview Elder Care in Curwensville.

Born Jan. 17, 1935 in Mahaffey, she was the daughter of the late John Bailey and Ida (James) Bailey.

She was a past member of the Christ United Methodist Church. She cleaned offices for the Area Agency on Aging.

She’s survived by one brother, John Bailey of North Carolina; a cousin, Connie Butler and her husband, Tim; and several cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Sherman Jay; second husband, Thomas Bowman; and two brothers, Thomas and Robert Bailey.

Per the family’s wishes, there are no public services. Burial will be in Centre Cemetery.
