Helen Louise (Kasubick) Kislack, 93, of Alexandria, Va. and formerly of Houtzdale, died peacefully Tuesday, July 8, 2014 in Alexandria, Va.

Born Feb. 1, 1921 in Dogtown, Woodward Township, she was one of seven children born to the late Frank and Helen (Swidersky) Kasubick.

Mrs. Kislack, who will be remembered for the twinkle in her eye and her infectious smile, was a long-time member of St. Barbara’s and Christ the King Catholic Churches, Houtzdale. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Victoria, No. 646.

She enjoyed reading, crocheting, playing cards, games and going to bingo, auctions and craft shows. She was a good cook and baker and loved tending to her flowers outside in the summertime.

Mrs. Kislack attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in Ocean. She and her late husband owned numerous businesses in Houtzdale, including a restaurant, the Gulf Service Station and the first self-service grocery store with frozen food and locker rentals.

On June 28, 1941 in Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Osceola Mills, she married Alex Kislack. He preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 2004.

She is survived by a son, Lawrence Kislack of Arizona; two daughters, Shirley Tirch and Bonnie Norris, both of Virginia; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Kislack was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two children, Patricia and William; three brothers, Frank, Thomas and Leonard; and three sisters, Mary Redzenski, Leona Tubo and Jean Kawa. She was the last of her siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Houtzdale, with Father Joseph Staszewski celebrant. Burial will follow in St Barbara’s Cemetery, Brisbin.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale.

Staszewski will hold a vigil service at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. It will be followed by the recitation of the Rosary by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas at 6:30 p.m.

Terry L. Evans, 66 of Hyde died Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at her residence.  Born Jan. 31, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Daryl Peoples and Dorothy Jean Evans.

She was employed as a caregiver for the elderly. She was a former member of Clearfield Moose. She was a social member of the VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing and most especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving are two grandchildren, Jessica M. Evans and her companion Nate Menio of Williamsport and Curtis A. Evans and his companion Christi of Goshen; a brother, Larry Evans of Clearfield; an aunt, Linda Maines of Hyde; and numerous cousins and family members.

She was preceded in death her mother; son, Paul C. Evans on Oct. 8, 2011; and two brothers, Bud and Joe Evans.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life Service at 1 p.m. Monday at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home Inc., Clearfield, with Pastor Sue Arnold officiating.

A time to share memories and have an opportunity to view will be held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be made in Eden Cemetery.

Terril “Terry” Stiles Sr., 76, of Houtzdale died Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at his residence. Born July 2, 1938 in Burlington, NJ, he was the son of George W. and Hazel Stiles.

Mr. Stiles was a member of the Brisbin Baptist Church. He was employed as the lead utility analyst operator of the Penn State water treatment plant until his retirement. Mr. Stiles was an avid model train enthusiast.

On July 10, 2004 in Brisbin, he married Josephine Truax Stiles, who survives at home.

He’s survived by two daughters, Tammy Maciocha and her husband, Rich of Mantua, NJ and Cindy Stiles of Mount Laurel, NJ; two sons, Terry Stiles and his wife, Kim of Houtzdale and Ricky Stiles and his wife, Michelle of Little Egg Harbor, NJ.

Also surviving are his step-children, Patti Barrelle and her husband, Gary of Loganville, Ga., Rich Truax and his wife, Sherri and Glenn Truax, both of Houtzdale, Margie Carr and her husband, Bob of Ohio, and Alan Lindenberg and his wife, Gail of Tennessee; eight grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; a number of nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Sandra Eminhzer of Houtzdale.

Mr. Stiles was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, George W. Stiles Jr. and his wife, Josephine “Dolly” Stiles.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Brisbin Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Melhorn officiating. Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brisbin.

Family and friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale.

Eleanor Marie Matea (Bungo), 79, died April 23, 2014 in Key West, Fla.  Born Dec. 4, 1934 in Colver, she was the daughter of the late George and Clara Bungo.

On Oct. 6, 1956, she married Charles “Buzz” Matea Jr. of Ramey, whom died Dec. 21, 2001.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Charles Matea III in September of 1984.

She’s survived by a daughter, Karen Richards (Paul) of Goldsboro, NC; a son, David Matea (Virginia) of Key West, Fla.; a brother, Henry Bungo (Loretta) of Broomall; two sisters, CarolKitko (Robert Sr.) of Houtzdale and Clara Nebinger (Chap) of Kittanning; two sisters-in-law, Emma McCully of Ramey and Florence Broberg of Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Caitlin, Christopher, Stephanie, Samantha and Sabrina; and five great-grandchildren, Samaria, Daniel, Willamena, Malia and Samiah.

She was a 1955 graduate of the Philipsburg School of Nursing. She retired as a nurse and dedicated caregiver. Over the years, she and her husband, a 20-year U.S. Navy veteran, were stationed at [ck1] Lakehurst, NJ; East Greenrock, RI; Key West, Fla. and North Keystone, RI. She returned to Key West, Fla., where she worked in the Naval Hospital and the Florida Keys Hospital as a Certified Navy Occupational Health nurse. Following retirement, she resided in Ocala, Fla.

She was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ocala, Fla. where she enjoyed volunteering.

A funeral mass was held on April 28, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church and she rests at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

Pearl E. Springborn, 82, of Brockway died Thursday, July 10, 2014 at the DuBois Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 2, 1931 in Marquette, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Francis and Pearl (Huelett) Smith.

She worked for White Haines in Columbus, Ohio for many years.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She’s survived by her children,  Chris Springborn and his wife, Kahne of Loveland, OH, Sally Crooks and her husband, Donald of Chillcothe, Ohio; Debra Kohlhepp and her husband, Benjamin of Falls Creek and Tammy Jewell and her husband, Donald of DuBois.

She’s also survived by a brother, Francis Smith of Neogia, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Daniel Kohlhepp, Julia Gallegos, John Kohlhepp, Tyler Amos, Ashley Higgins, Trevor Amos, Cas Springborn and Clayton Jewell); and four great-grandchildren, Mateo and Chavez Gallegos, Parker Higgins and Truitt Kohlhepp.

She was preceded in death by her son, Lon Springborn; a grandson, Christopher Jewell; and two brothers, Arthur Smith and John Huelett.

There will be no public visitation.

A memorial service for friends and family of Pearl E. Springborn will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the chapel at Morningside Cemetery with Pastor Donald Crooks officiating.

Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery.

Jeffrey L. Freeman, 47, of Erhard died Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Penn Highlands Clearfield.

Born March 28, 1967 in Greenville, he was the son of Joseph W. and Jessie L. (Rowley) Freeman of Erhard.

He was a 1985 graduate of Clearfield High School. He received an Associate’s degree in mechanical drafting from Triangle Tech, DuBois.

He was employed for 25 years with PennDOT as a construction inspector and computer technician. He was the founder of Magnum Opus Woodworking of Erhard.

He enjoyed working on computers and cars, woodworking and especially his grandchildren.

He served as a U.S. Army Reservist and was a member of Oak Ridge Union Church.  He was a member of ASCME Local No. 2603, Clearfield, where he held the office of Chief Union Steward.

On Aug. 18, 1990 in Oak Ridge Union Church, he married Crystal D. Lockett Freeman, who survives of Erhard.

He’s survived by a son and daughter, Casey J. Freeman (Kim) and Allison F. Freeman, all of Erhard; two grandchildren, Gage and Wyatt Freeman; four siblings, Joseph J. “Toad” Freeman (Janet) of Glen Richey, Patricia M. Lockett (Kevin) and Thomas L. Freeman (Cindy), both of Erhard, and Ruth Ann Coder (Ken) of Clearfield; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews

He’s also survived by his mother-in-law, Jone Lockett of Carnwath.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Clara Rowley; his paternal grandparents, Lewis and Anna Freeman; and his father-in-law, Donald Lockett.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kruise Funeral Home Inc., Madera.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Kruise Funeral Home Inc., Madera, with Pastor Michael Knepp officiating.

Burial will follow in the Fruit Hill Cemetery, Ansonville.

Elsie R. Wesesky, 84, of Philipsburg died Friday, July 11, 2014 at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg.

Born Feb. 4, 1930 in Port Matilda, she was a daughter of the late John Quincy and Mary (Blazosky) Adams.

She was a 1948 graduate of Philipsburg High School. She was employed at the former General Cigar factory and also a homemaker.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Philipsburg. She enjoyed spending time with her family, loved her daily soaps and spent many hours reading her Bible.

On July 2, 1956 in Winchester, Va., she married Andrew Wesesky, whom preceded her in death on Aug. 14, 2002.

She is survived by two sons, Mark A. Wesesky and his wife, Beth of Pittsburgh and Christopher Wesesky and his wife, Diane of Philipsburg; and a daughter-in-law, Betty Wesesky of Clearfield.

She’s also survived by three sisters, Mabel Wilkinson of Bellefonte, Lucy Kephart of Philipsburg and Anna Leforte of Alliance, Ohio; three grandchildren, David and Christina of Philipsburg and Luke of Pittsburgh; a step-granddaughter, Angel of Clearfield; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Matthew A. Wesesky; a sister, Edith Hackman; and a brother, Matthew Adams.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the David K. Dahlgren Funeral Home, 228 N. Centre St., Philipsburg, with the Rev. Clifford A. Johnston officiating.

Burial will be in the Philipsburg Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ricky E. Nelson, 48, of Grassflat died Saturday, July 12, 2014 at his residence. Born Aug. 18, 1965 in Philipsburg, he was the son of Ernest C. and Marlene Veres Nelson of Grassflat.

Mr. Nelson was a member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church, Grassflat.  He was a 1984 graduate of the West Branch High School.

He was employed as a custodian at the West Branch High School. He was also self-employed in lawn care and landscaping.

He was a life member of the Grassflat Volunteer Fire Company. He was a member of the L.O.O.M., Grassflat, No. 941, and the Cooper Township and Mosquito Creek Sportsmen’s Clubs.

Mr. Nelson is survived by two sisters, Connie L. Nelson and Mary Lou Nelson, both of Grassflat, and two brothers, Craig J. Nelson and his wife, Nicole of Philipsburg and Kevin J. Nelson of State College.

He is also survived by a niece, Kayci Nelson and two nephews, Trey Nelson and Parker Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Mary Lucas Veres and his paternal grandparents, Algor and Eleverda Nelson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sts. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church, Grassflat, with the Father David A. Perry Jr. as celebrant.

Burial will be in the Sts. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Cemetery, Grassflat.

Anna Vaughan Lee Hinkle, 88, of Clearfield died Friday, July 11, 2014 at her home. She was born July 18, 1925, a daughter of the late Asbury Wright Lee Jr. and Jane Joplin Lee.

Mrs. Hinkle was an active member for more than 60 years of the Presbyterian Church of Clearfield, where she served as Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder. Mrs. Hinkle graduated in 1945 from the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr and attended Mount Vernon College in Washington D.C.

Always enjoying being involved with the community, she served on the board of directors of the Children’s Aid Society for 24 years. She also served as vice president of the Clearfield Heritage Foundation for eight years. She was employed in retail sales for 12 years in Clearfield.

She is survived by three children, Susan Hinkle Rosenberg and her husband, David of DuBois, Richard Philip Hinkle of Sarasota, Fla. and Edward Joseph Hinkle of Pleasant Gap; two grandchildren, Joshua Ian and Emily Ann Rosenberg; and many nieces and nephews whom held a special place in her heart.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert R. Hinkle Jr., on Dec. 11, 2011 and whom she married on June 18, 1949; two brothers, Joseph Joplin Lee and Asbury W. Lee; and a sister, Mary Jane Lee Woolridge.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church, Clearfield, with the Rev. J. Robert Mellgard officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Clearfield.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. until the hour of services Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Children’s Aid Society, 1004 S. Second St., Clearfield, or to the Presbyterian Church, 119 N. Second St., Clearfield.

Earl E. Myers, 63, of Philipsburg died Sunday, July 13, 2014 at his home.

Born Feb. 3, 1951 in McKeesport, he was the son of the late George Myers and Naomi (Poorman) Myers Kreiser.  He married Lisa M. (Luna) Myers on July 10, 2008 in Kylertown; she survives at home.

Mr. Myers was of the Christian faith.  He was retired as the owner of the former Myers Painting Contracting in Delaware and he was a 1969 graduate of the Peters Township High School in McMurray.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Georgeanna Myers.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Myers is survived by two sons, Edward Myers and his wife, Robin of Wisconsin and Jeff Babesh of Pittsburgh; a sister, Marlene Thorne and her husband, Leon of Thorne, NJ; and two grandchildren, Amber Myers and C.J. Myers.

At Mr. Myers’ request, there will be no funeral service and no visitation.

Helen Suplizio, 93, formerly of DuBois, died Monday, July 14, 2014 at Christ the King Manor. Born Feb. 24, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Julia (Lesega) Hoskavich.

On Oct. 11, 1941 in Sykesville, she married James Suplizio. He preceded her in death in April of 2008.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.

She was a charter member of the Friendship Hose Company No. 2 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Christ the King Manor Auxiliary.  She was active in the former Sons of Italy in DuBois and a member of the Brockway Sons of Italy.

She’s survived by her son, Ronald J. Suplizio of Largo, Fla. and her daughter, Marsha McCurdy and her husband, James of Brockway; three sisters, Anastasia Murone and Dorothy Scull and her husband, Ronald, both of DuBois, and Martha Esposito of Brockway; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Michael, Stephen, Harry and Joseph Hoskavich and two sisters, Mary Larsen and Anna Topeck.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Friday at the chapel at Christ the King Manor.

A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the chapel at Christ the King Manor with Msgr. Desmond McGee as celebrant.

William Joseph “Bill” Barnes, 82, of Savannah, Ga. and formerly of Philipsburg, died peacefully Sunday, July 13, 2014, at Spanish Oaks Retreat and Hospice, Savannah, Ga.

Mr. Barnes was born Jan. 7, 1932, in Philipsburg, a son of the late Joseph Alexander and Lois (Dunsmore) Barnes.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John Alexander Barnes, in addition to his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Martha Ann “Marty” (Jones) Barnes; two sons, Jeffrey Barnes of Savannah, Ga., and John Barnes of Melbourne, Australia; and four grandchildren, Carly, Cameron, Loren and Parker.

Mr. Barnes attended the Valley Forge Military Academy, Valley Forge; he was a graduate of the former Philipsburg High School.

He received his Bachelor’s degree from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, where he was a member of Band Company.

He entered the U.S. Marines after graduation. He retired with the rank of major from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

He later worked for the U.S. Department of Education as a special investigator and mediator.

In 2004, the 40th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, he was part of a group recognized in a special ceremony in Washington. D.C. as a Civil Rights Champion.

Mr. Barnes was an active adult leader and past scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America while his sons were growing up in Atlanta, Ga.

After moving to Savannah, he was then a volunteer docent for many years at the National Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum. The last event he attended, before his illness took over, was a memorable flight for him in a World War II Era B-17, arranged by the Museum.

He was always interested in history and genealogy and he researched his family history through hundreds of years. He was active in the Scottish Highland Games.

He was a member of The Citadel Alumni Association, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, General Society of Colonial Wars and Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge.

As a young boy growing up in Philipsburg during World War II, he would ask returning soldiers for their extra patches and insignias, and this would spawn a lifelong interest in collecting World War II memorabilia. Parts of his collection are on loan to the Eighth Air Force Museum.

The family would like to extend its special thanks to all those at Spanish Oaks Retreat and Hospice for their compassionate and expert care.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Philipsburg Cemetery, with the Rev. William H. Moore, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.

Albert L. Dinsmore, 94, of Clearfield died Friday, July 11, 2014. He was born Dec. 5, 1919 in Pine Creek, a son of the late Robert and Rebecca (Dobson) Dinsmore.

Mr. Dinsmore retired from Sky Haven Coal Co. after many years of employment.  A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II. Mr. Dinsmore was an avid hunter.

He is survived by three daughters, Linda Patterson of Lakeland, Fla., Jo-Ann Demchak and her companion, Sonnie Gearhart of Reynoldsville and Tina Chamberlain and her husband, Chuck of Rock Falls, Ill.

He’s survived by five grandchildren, Shannon Dowell, Shane Lechler, Avery Vardaman, Tiffany Lechler and Jennifer Patterson and six great-grandchildren, Ronie Gaskin, Paige and Taylor Dowell, Camden, Madison and Boston Lechler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Pauline (Leigey) Dinsmore, on Nov. 20, 1960; his second wife, Jacquelene L. (Leigey) Waple Dinsmore, on April 15, 1998 and whom he wed Aug. 24, 1963; an infant daughter; a great-granddaughter, Camryn Dowell; two sisters, Mary Murray and Florence Dinsmore; and a son-in-law, Ronald Patterson.

Glen William Zorger, 86, of Hepburnia died Sunday, July 13, 2014 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield.

A devote follower of Jesus Christ, he was born Jan. 29, 1928 in Akron, Ohio, and was the eldest child of Adrian and Margaret (Johnston) Zorger. He attended school in Curry Run, Clearfield, and graduated in 1946 from Mahaffey High School, excelling in math and science.

He was a member of the 532nd Engineer, Boat and Shore Regiment of the U.S. Army from December of 1950 until November of 1952, serving in both Japan and Korea.

He was the devoted husband of Myrtle Rebecca (Keller) Zorger, whom he married on Oct. 11, 1953 and moved to Youngstown, Ohio, where he worked in the steel mills. Upon their return to the area, they bought their home in Hepburnia, where they grew flowers, fruit trees and a large vegetable garden each year, which they shared with family and friends.

He was employed as a semi-truck mechanic and also a heavy equipment operator, working in a number of companies and retiring from McDonald Coal Company in 1990. He was an avid gardener, loved music and cars, enjoyed traveling to historical places, attending Mahaffey Camp and the Curwensville Alliance Church.

He was the older brother of twins, Virginia Wilson of Bells Landing and the former Donald A. Zorger.

He was the beloved father of Amy Lane (Zorger) Boudreau and David Wayne Zorger, both of Georgia.

He has six grandchildren, Alyssa and Glen Boudreau of Snellville, Ga.; Brittany Langford and Bethany Zorger of Colliverville, Tenn., and Jonathan and Becca Zorger of Loganville, Ga. He also had two great-grandchildren, Stone and Sylas Langford.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Curwensville, with the Rev. Stephen D. Shields officiating. Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery, Grampian.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Curwensville, and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Curwensville Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 725 Susquehanna Ave., Curwensville.

Karen L. (Smolko) Waite, 55, of Van Ormer died Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at UPMC Altoona. She was born Oct. 6, 1958 in Philipsburg, a daughter of Martin and Catherine (Slinkosky) Smolko Sr. of Van Ormer.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed her family, crocheting and taking care of people.  She was a member of the Janesville VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

On May 26, 1984 in Clearfield, she married George F. “Red” Waite Sr., who survives of Van Ormer.
She’s survived by five children, Jerry Hockenberry, Christopher Hockenberry and Patricia L. Waite, all of Van Ormer; Timothy Hockenberry of Janesville; and George F. Waite Jr. (Angela) of Osceola Mills. She is survived by 15 grandchildren.

She’s survived by eight siblings, Michael Smolko (Darlene) of Osceola Mills; James Smolko (Donna) of Erie; Cindy Beers (Robert) and Barbara Selvage (Darryl), both of Janesville; Martin Smolko Jr (Shelia) of West Decatur; Linda Albright of Irvona; and Brandon Smolko and Jason Smolko, both of Van Ormer.  She’s also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and by her father-in-law, Enlow “Brownie’ Campbell of Janesville.

She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Phoebe Mae Campbell.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Friday at the Kruise Funeral Home Inc., Ramey.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Kruise Funeral Home Inc., with Pastor Clare L. Pannebaker officiating. Graveside services will follow in the Utahville Cemetery.

Robert Ray Reader, 81, of Hawk Run died Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, University Drive campus, Pittsburgh.

Born Jan. 2, 1933 in Tyrone, he was the son of the late John and Dena (Snyder) Reader.  He married the former Ida Irene Rech on Nov. 26, 1955 in Winchester, Va.; she survives in Philipsburg.

Mr. Reader was Protestant by faith.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion.

He was a truck driver for many years. He then worked as a cabinet maker for his father-in-law, Julius “Gus” Rech, of Gus Manufacturing of Osceola Mills until retiring.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Reader; a granddaughter, Alicia Reader; two brothers, Alfred and Roy Reader; and a sister, Dorothy Dillon.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Reader is survived by a daughter, Peggy Custred and her husband, Tom of Smoke Run and five sons, Don Reader of Lake Worth, Fla.; Dan Reader and his wife, Tracy, Steve Reader and his companion, Roxanne and Rob Reader and his companion, Cindy, all of Houtzdale; and Bill Reader and his wife, Olga of Miami, Fla.

He’s survived by a brother, Fred Reader of Altoona.  He’s also survived by 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the chapel at Windy Hill Village, 100 Dogwood Dr., Philipsburg, with the Rev. William R. Walker officiating.

Mr. Reader’s family will receive friends from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday at the Windy Hill Village chapel.

Military honors will be accorded by members of the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.

Leon F. ‘Squeaky’ Bauer, 90, of Frenchville died Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at his home.

He was born April 4, 1924 in St. Marys, a son of the late Norman and Hilda (Pontzer) Bauer.

He served with the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II. He was employed with Pure Carbon Co. of St. Marys for 30 years until retiring in 1984.

He is survived by his long-time friend and companion, Leona (Beauseigneur) Davis of Frenchville; a sister, Malene Wegemer of Casper, WY; a brother, George Bauer of St. Marys; several nieces and nephews; and his trusted dog, Brady.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Fred and Clara Pontzer; his wife, Edna (Grotzinger) Bauer; and two sisters, Mary Martha Lenze and Clarice ‘Tootie’ Bauer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Mary’s Church, St. Marys, with the Fr. Alfred Patterson, O.S.B. as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, St. Marys.

Military honors will be accorded at cemetery by the members of the St. Marys Burial Detail.

At the request of Mr. Bauer, there will be no public viewing.

Mark Anthony Curulla, 79, of Curwensville died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 19, 1934 in St. Marys, he was the son of Joseph and Mary Ceilla (Rossi) Curulla.

He attended schools at Dents Run, Benezette and Clearfield. He graduated from the Curwensville High School with high honors.

He also took accounting and paralegal courses at Scranton. He was a member of St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Clearfield.

Mr. Curulla was an insurance consultant for Kemper and Lumberman Mutual Insurance Companies. He, along with his wife, Sara, owned and operated a small restaurant on Filbert Street in Curwensville between 1960 and 1963.

He started his railroad career with the Chesapeake & Ohio and CSX Transportation in 1952 at Bickford as a laborer and machine operator. He was promoted to production foreman and inspector working for the Buffalo and Pennsylvania Divisions.

He retired in October of 1998 after 36 years of service.  He was a member of the AFL-CIO Union and was local chairman of lodges in DuBois, Punxsutawney and Indiana.

Between 1999 and 2003, he worked as an office manager for professional and student housing in State College.

Mr. Curulla was a member and past president of the Curwensville Borough Council. He was chairman of the Planning Commission and received “Councilman of the Year” honors in 2012.  Mr. Curulla served more than 40 years on borough council.

He was a lifetime member of the Rescue Hose & Ladder Co. of Curwensville. He was a former member of the Curwensville L.O.O.M., the Clearfield Eagles and the former Curwensville S.O.I.

In 1953 in Clearfield, he wed the former Sara Rose Carfley, who survives, along with two sons, David Curulla and his wife, Karen of Clearfield and Joseph Curulla and his wife, Donnie of Roanoke, Va.

Also surviving are two grandsons, Daniel Donahue and his wife, Ashley and their children,  Isabelle, Finnan and Parker, and Joseph Curulla and his wife, Jessie and their daughter, Charlotte of Virginia; two sisters, Virginia Chuba and her husband, Joe of State College and Gloria Averill of DuBois; and a niece, Laura and her son, Jai, a great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren and four brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Clearfield, with the Rev. Father Brandon Kleckner as celebrant.  Burial will be in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Thursday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. Curwensville, and again from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Friday when the procession will depart for the church. Scripture Vigil Services will be conducted at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Frank Jurewicz, 71, of Glen Hope died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Clearfield Penn Highlands. Born Sept. 2, 1942 in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of the late Francis and Martha (Nichols) Jurewicz.

Mr. Jurewicz served honorably in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Houtzdale American Legion, Freeberg Post No. 591; the Houtzdale Loyal Order of Moose No. 327; the Osceola Lodge No. 515 F&AM; and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local No. 950.

Mr. Jurewicz was employed as a union carpenter until his retirement.

He is survived by a son, Daniel Jurewicz of Glen Hope and three sisters, Roseanne Duda of New Jersey, Barbara Jurewicz of Scranton and Marilyn Melillo of Garwood, NJ.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no public visitation at the request of Mr. Jurewicz.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. July 26 at the Houtzdale American Legion. Burial will be in the American Legion Cemetery, Brisbin.

He was born on November 21, 1922 in Oil City, the son of Peter Daniel and LuVera (Hess) Ausel.

Mr. Ausel was a member of the West Side United Methodist Church.

He retired from the Penelec Power Plant having worked there since its inception as Shift Supervisor.

Mr. Ausel was a member of the Venango Masonic Lodge.

He was a pilot and loved to fly, and was proud to have taught his wife to fly as well. He also loved farming, and was devoted to his family.

Mr. Ausel is survived by a daughter; Jill E. Ausel of Pittsburgh, PA and a son, John E. Ausel of Sigel, PA, a granddaughter, Katie A. Penoyer and her husband, Bradley S., of Clearfield, three great- grandchildren: Benjamin Leighow, Addison and Avanelle Penoyer and a sister, Beatrice Ausel of Clarion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Barbara B. (Barnes) Ausel whom he married on October 30, 1953 in Rouseville, PA and who passed away on April 2, 2014 and a sister, Betty Crouch.

Funeral Services will be held at Bennett and Houser Funeral Home, Inc., Clearfield on Monday, July 21, 2014 at 12:00 PM with Rev. Dr. Joleen A. Willis officiating. Burial will be in Donahey Hills Cemetery, Millstone Twp., Elk County.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday, July 21st from 10:00 A.M until the hour of the services.
