Katherine M. Zwolski, 77, of Curwensville died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 at the Ridgeview Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center, Curwensville.

She was born May 4, 1939, a daughter of the late Rudolph and Mary (Lash) Olosky.

Mrs. Zwolski was a homemaker and a member of the St. Timothy Catholic Church, Curwensville

She is survived by her son, Jason Zwolski of Curwensville; five sisters, Ethel Goodman and her husband, Richard of Florida, Mary Ann Kelly and her husband, John of Blairsville, Agnes Zattoni of Curwensville, Margaret Riddle of Frederick, Md., and Irene Douglas and her husband Bill of New York; and two brothers, Michael Olosky and his wife, Shelia of DuBois and Rudy Olosky of Curwensville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter ‘Teddy’ Zwolski, on Aug. 9, 2002 and to whom she was wed April 22, 1976 in Curwensville.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Curwensville, with Gary Jewart officiating.  Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Curwensville.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Timothy Catholic Church, 306 Walnut St., Curwensville.

Annette M “Boris” Trella, 78, of Houtzdale and a guest of Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 at the center.

Born Jan. 13, 1938 in Houtzdale, she was the daughter of Paul and Marion (Nida) Murawski.

She was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Houtzdale, and had taught religious education.

She was a 1956 graduate of Moshannon Valley High School. She enjoyed caring for animals and loved bingo.

Until her retirement, she was employed by Sylvania, Zulick Chevrolet and Goodwill Industries in sales, and she served as a tax collector for Woodward Township.

On Oct. 29, 1968 in the Polish Catholic Church, Houtzdale, she married Thomas Trella, who survives at home.

She is survived by her siblings, Doris (Phil) Kitko and Paulette (Tom) Hopkins, both of Houtzdale, Allen Murawski of Duke Center, Patrick (Sandie) Murawski of Yorktown, Va., Denis (Jacquie) Murawski of Clearfield and Joyce (Tom) Ridgway of Osceola Mills; two sisters-in-law, Delores “Dory” Archibald of Harrisburg and Pat (Bill) Waltman of Everett; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was an adoring sister and aunt, and she cherished and helped raise Tom, Craig, Nathan, Zachary and Mackenzie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Marion Murawski, Joan Simmons and Melanie Murawski; and a brother-in-law, Lee Archibald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the Christ the King Catholic Church, Houtzdale, with Father Zab Amar as celebrant.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Birger A. Freeberg Funeral Home Inc., Houtzdale.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Brisbin.

The Rosary will be recited by the Altar and Rosary Society at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Elmer David Fulesday, 93, of Clearfield died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 at home.

He was born April 16, 1923 in Clearfield, the son of Charles and Sophia Fulesday, both immigrants from Hungary.

The original spelling of their surname was “Fulesdi.” The extra vowel was added to “Americanize” their name.

Mr. Fulesday was married for 49 years to Irene Thompson Fulesday, who preceded him in death Aug. 31, 1998.

He retired after 43 years with Penelec, joining the company as a lineman in Oil City before transferring to Clearfield.

He worked as a lineman and retired as supervisor of the division line department.

He is survived by two children, David G. Fulesday and his wife, Elizabeth of Curwensville and Beth Fulesday Hallstrom and her husband, Rick of Clearfield and three granddaughters, Kathryn Murawski and her husband, Rich and Amy Fulesday, all of Curwensville, and Sunny Reitmyer of Erie.

Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Alex, Sophia Irene and Lucas Murawski; a foster son, John Snyder, his wife, Rebecca and their children of Hastings; a brother-in-law, F. Clair Thompson of Clearfield; two sisters-in-law, Ann Kyler and her husband, Ardell and Helen MacDowell, all of Johnstown; and numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives, both here in America and in Hungary.

Following the fall of Communism, he and his five brothers and sisters traveled to Hungary to meet their relatives and, until 2001, they made an annual trip there.

The last member of his generation, Mr. Fulesday was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and siblings, Joseph, who died in childhood, Charles, Edward, Sophia, Marian and Joseph, who was named for his deceased brother.

He was a U.S Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion John Lewis Shade Post 6.

Mr. Fulesday was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Clearfield, where he served many terms on church council, chaired numerous committees and volunteered countless hours.

Until 2015, he organized the outside planting of geraniums that decorated the church at Pentecost. He was also a Eucharistic minister, taking Communion to church members and other residents of area nursing and personal care homes.

He was a 50-plus year member and past master of Clearfield Lodge 314, Free and Accepted Masons and, two years ago, was honored as a 50-year member of the Coudersport Consistory.

A senior member of the Kiwanis Club of Clearfield in the 1990’s, he served as District 11 lieutenant governor and for many years, he organized the club’s annual Halloween parade.

Mr. Fulesday and his wife were very active with the American Red Cross. He was a 23-gallon blood donor and served on the Disaster Services Committee. Twice they traveled to California to oversee shelters following the Los Angeles and San Francisco earthquakes.

At various times in his life, Mr. Fulesday was a board member or volunteer for DeMolay, Boy Scouts, 4-H, Habitat for Humanity, Camp Sequanota of the Lutheran Church, the county foster parent program, Clearfield County 911 Committee, Clearfield County Local Emergency Planning Committee, the county’s Emergency Operations Center staff, Clearfield Hobby Garden Club and Clearfield YMCA.

Mr. and Mrs. Fulesday were among the first volunteers for Clearfield Hospital’s Hospice Program and, in 1992, the Clearfield Rotary Club honored them for outstanding achievement in civic responsibility. This was followed by a citation by the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

A Committal Service and interment for the family and those who wish to attend will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Cemetery, Clearfield.

A memorial service will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the St. John Lutheran Church, 217 E. Pine St., Clearfield, with the Revs. Chuck Swenson and Robert J. Way officiating. A brief visitation will be held prior to the service at the church.

Friends and family will be received from 1 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, 113 N. Third St., Clearfield.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Kiwanis Club of Clearfield’s Kenneth “Bull” Gearheart Scholarship Fund, which may be mailed to Randy Lemmo, 2406 Meadow Rd., Clearfield, PA, 16830.

Mary M. Astare, 97, a resident of TLC Manor, Brisbin, and formerly of Hawk Run, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 at the personal care home.

Born May 25, 1919 in Hawk Run, she was a daughter of the late Matthew “Mike” and Mary (Kardohely) Astare.

She was a member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Hawk Run, and of the church Altar-Rosary Society.

She was also a member of the First Catholic Slovak Union, Jednota Lodge No. 456, Hawk Run.

She was employed at Charles Navasky & Co., Philipsburg, until her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Margaret Ashcroft, Anna Fenush and Helen Butterworth; and two brothers, John and Rudolph Astare.

She is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Kasubick and her husband, Joseph “Mick” of Houtzdale and 25 nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Hawk Run, with Fr. Robert J. Horgas as celebrant.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Sunday at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, 719 E. Spruce St., Philipsburg. The Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Leon Edward “Bill” Heider Sr., 92, of Sykesville died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 at Penn Highlands DuBois.

Born Sept. 19, 1924 in Murrysville, Pa., he was the son of the late Walter J. and Emily (Kaill) Heider.

On Aug. 20, 1949, he married Shirley (Lucas) Heider.  She survives.

He retired from Consolidated Natural Gas Company where he worked as a division accountant.

Mr. Heider attended Grace United Methodist Church. 

He was a past president and treasurer of the Sykesville Lions Club.  He was the Sykesville Man of the Year in 1976. 

He was also a manager of the Sykesville Boys League Baseball Team and the Sykesville Boy Scout Leader Troop 75. 

He was a former volunteer fireman in Murrysville, Pa., and enjoyed many years with friends and family at the Hardy Gang Hunting Camp in Tioga County.

Mr. Heider is survived by four children,  Leon E. Heider Jr. and his wife, Linda of Shelocta, Pa., Donna Trulik and her husband, Jeff of Elkins, W.Va., David Heider and his wife, Anita of Painesville, Ohio and Diane Cherico and her husband, Anthony of Pottstown, Pa.; a sister, Joan Zimmerman of Cape Coral, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 10 siblings.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Monday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home and again from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with Pastor Carol Bergman officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard at the church.

Burial will be in Sykesville Memorial Cemetery.

John R. “Zookie” McGonigal Sr., 76, of Karthaus was surrounded by family when he died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 at the Center for Compassionate Care, Pittsburgh.

He was born Sept. 13, 1940, the son of the late Raymond and Helen (Rauch) McGonigal.

Mr. McGonigal worked construction and lastly was a heavy equipment operator for River Hill Coal Company, Karthaus.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was well-known for his many hats and songs.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve (Gill) McGonigal, at home; his sons, John (Lora) McGonigal Jr. and Tim (Michele) McGonigal; his daughter, Tammy (John) Couteret; grandchildren, John, Jason, Jacob and Jessi,; eight great-grand-children; and step-grandchildren, Kyle and Bryan Richner.

Also surviving are his sisters, Emily (Ed) Narehood, Mary Teats, Nancy (John) Lesko and brothers, Bill (Ruthann) McGonigal and Don McGonigal.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Ronald Glace; sisters, Dot Teats, Betty Heichel, Helen Glace and Patsy Narehood; and a brother, Robert McGonigal.

There will be no public visitation or funeral services.

David L. Lytle, 59, of Pinchy died Friday, Jan. 13, 2017 in Black Moshannon.

Born Aug. 2, 1957 in Philipsburg, he was the son of the late Hollis and Mary Coble Lytle. His long-time companion, Sharon “Sis” K. Smeal, survives at home in Pinchy.

Also surviving are step-sons, Michael Lutz and his wife, Nikki of Bigler, Jeffery Lutz and his wife, Jamie of Winburne and Timothy Lutz and his wife, Shannon of Saylorsburg, 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, sisters, Deloris Sudik of Winburne, Ruth Blake of Chester Hill, Betty Lytle of Punxsutawney and Diane Teats of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John and James Lytle.

He was owner/operator of Dave Lytle Logging, RR Morrisdale. He loved working and being outdoors. He was a life member of the Morris Township Volunteer Fire Company, Station 17, Morrisdale.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20 at the Chapel of Strange & Weaver Funeral Service, Morrisdale, with the Rev. James Hollister officiating. Burial will be in Fairview United Methodist Cemetery, RR Morrisdale.

Neil William McCartney, 97, of Walltown/Grampian died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 at his residence after an illness.

Born Aug. 8, 1919 in Grampian, he was the son of Thomas and Annie (Clark) McCartney.  Mr. McCartney was a welder and had retired from the Budd Company in Philadelphia. 

He was also a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II, and he’d served with the engineers.

He was a member of the St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church in Grampian where he had been a member of the Holy Name Society.

On Sept. 6, 1942 in Barnegat, NJ, he wed the former Anne L. Jarossy, who preceded him in death March 14, 2011. 

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sister Carole McCartney IHM; a sister, Margaret Hogan; and six brothers, Paul, Lee, James, Edward, Patrick and Martin McCartney.

Surviving are four children, Cheryl Doherty and her husband, Robert of New Park, Neil McCartney Jr. and his wife, Teresa of Williamstown, NJ, Michael McCartney and his wife, Sharon of Walltown and Kevin McCartney and his wife, Vickie of Owensboro, KY.

Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three sisters, Edith Wheeler and her husband, Virgil “Dick” of Walltown, Ruth Ann Dunlap and her husband, Willard of DuBois and Ethel Haugen of Oklahoma City, Okla.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church, Grampian, with the Rev. Father Mark J. Mastrian as celebrant.  Burial will follow in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Grampian.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville and again from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. Wednesday when the procession will depart for the church.

The Rosary will be recited at 1:45 p.m. by members of the St. Theresa Guild of St. Bonaventure Church and a Scripture Vigil Service will be conducted at 7:45 p.m., both Tuesday at the funeral home.

The family suggests contributions be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Obituary Notice: Leo James Haky

Leo James Haky, 76, of Sykesville died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. He was surrounded by the love of his family for whom he cared so deeply.

He is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor; devoted daughters and son, Shannon Shaffer, Marcia Snyder and Mike Haky; his beloved grandchildren, Josh Krach, Briana Carr, Ben Shaffer, Isaac, Sarah and Megan Haky; his beloved daughter-in-law, Karen Haky; and his son-in-law, Brian Shaffer.

Mr. Haky was a kind man. He was the most optimistic human being you could ever meet. He always believed that everything would be OK, no matter what.

He was an avid sports fan, attending many local events.  He enjoyed playing poker with his friends and also competitively. He was considered a top-rated player.

He had a soft spot in his heart for special needs children. He often reached out to those children and their families as well as other folks in need.

Mr. Haky was from Ford City, Pa., and the only child of Elizabeth and Leo Haky. After losing his parents at an early age, he moved to Yatesboro, Pa., to live with his grandma, grandpa, and uncle. 

He was a 1958 graduate of the Shannock Valley High School, and he attended Staunton Military Academy in Virginia. 

During his high school years, he was a local sports legend in football and baseball, but he was most famous for basketball. He actually is considered one of the best high school basketball players in the history of Pennsylvania.

He was named first team all-state for two consecutive years, and he was inducted into the Armstrong County Hall of Fame. He was a veteran who served his tour of duty in Germany.

On Aug. 24, 1963, he married Eleanor (Mehok) Haky.  She survives.

Mr. Haky retired as a supervisor from Beverage Air, and he was the truant officer for the DuBois Area School District.  He also drove the special needs school van for Jewell Bus Company for 10 years.

He was a wonderful, caring and kind person with the heart of a giant and a love for his family that was without equal. In dying, he taught us how to be strong, brave, dignified and he exhibited such a will to live in such dire circumstances.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.

A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Church in Sykesville with Fr. Vasyl Banyk as celebrant. 

Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Cemetery.

Although flowers are appreciated, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Sykesville Library, 21 E. Main St., Sykesville, PA 15865 and or the Sykesville Ambulance, Attention: Victor Kosko, 218 W. Liberty St., Sykesville, PA 15865.

Sharon Ann Frelin, 69, of Frenchville died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield.

She was born Dec. 25, 1947 in Clearfield, a daughter of the late Robert and Julia (Billotte) Stiner.

She spent the majority of her life caring for her parents and was Methodist by faith.

She is survived by her daughter, Cary Lynn Haney and her husband, Bill of Clearfield; grandchildren, Shelby Frelin and her fiancé, Robert, Taylor Frelin and Leah Lundberg, all of Clearfield, Kyle Billings of Curwensville and Christopher Dixon and his wife, Mindy of Shiloh; great-grandchildren, Tukura Mills and Katara Lundberg; and two brothers, Mark Stiner of LeContes Mills and Robert Stiner and his wife, Tina of Grassflat.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Daniel ‘Taz’ Thomas Frelin and a sister, Betty Shimp.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield, with Evangelist Raymond Stiner officiating. Burial will be in the Gillingham Cemetery, Frenchville.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mary Ann Warholic, 74, of Philipsburg died Friday, Jan. 13, 2017 at the Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.

Born July 5, 1942 in (Faunce) Houtzdale, she was the daughter of the late John W. Stonebreaker Sr. and Catherine (Carr) Stonebraker.

She was married to Metro Warholic, who preceded her in death Dec. 14, 2006.

Mrs. Warholic was a homemaker and had received her GED.  She enjoyed helping to raise her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Katherine Warholic; four sisters, Rosella Miller, Georganna Stonebreaker, Alice Fae Root and Charlotte Antes; three brothers, Sunny, John Jr. and Eugene Stonebreaker; and a daughter-in-law, Rise Warholic.

She is survived by two daughters, Frances P. Conrad of Philipsburg and Cynthia A. Smolko and her companion, Lavoine McKee of Milesburg and three sons, John C. Warholic of Philipsburg, Michael E. Warholic Sr. and his wife, Barbara of Houtzdale and Frank A. Warholic Sr. and his wife, Melanie of Madera.

She is also survived by one sister, Anna Mae Sipes of Florida; 16 grandchildren, Jeffery, Caleb, Josh, Michael Jr., Mckenzie, Victoria, Frank Jr., Karlee and Brittany Warholic, Crystal, Calvin Jr., Nathan and Niki Glass, John Conrad, Ryan McClelland and Clifford Smolko; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Osceola Mills with Pastor John T. Dill officiating.  Burial will be at the Crossroad Cemetery in Coalport.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Julia Mae Thomas, 78, of Houtzdale died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017 at her residence.

Born Sept. 25, 1938 in Brisbin, she was the daughter of Peter Joseph and Clemence (Castiaux) LeGrand.

She was member of the Brisbin Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday school and youth ministries.

Mrs. Thomas was a graduate of Woodward Township High School.

She was a member of the National Camping and Hiking Association and the Philipsburg Mountaineers. She was a former Girl Scout leader and enjoyed painting.

She operated an upholstery business and was previously employed by IGA and BiLo stores.

On July 20, 1958 in the Brisbin Baptist Church, she married Calvin Gene Thomas, who survives at home.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Ellis) Kirshner of Franklinville, NJ and two sons, Donald (Tina) Thomas of New Providence and Joseph (Laura) Thomas of Kansas City, Mo.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Joshua and Daniel Kirshner, Kaitlyn (Chris) Johnston and Andrew and Taylor Thomas; a sister, Josephine Stiles of Houtzdale; and a brother, Don (Elaine) LeGrand of Bridgewater, NJ.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Wednesday at the Brisbin Baptist Church.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Mark Melhorn officiating. Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Brisbin.

Veronica Lucas Humenay, 98, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017 at Edinboro Manor, Edinboro.

She was born in Grassflat on Feb. 3, 1918, the daughter of the late Demeter and Anna (Dzurko) Lucas.

She lived her first 83 years in Grassflat and was an active member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church.

She lived her later years with her children, Roni and Jerry or Mary. She was a devoted wife and mother who lived an unassuming life of love and faith.

She loved her Slovak heritage and kept its traditions alive and continued to sing its songs that she learned from her mother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Humenay, to whom she was married May 16, 1939. He died in 1978.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Betty, son, Joey, her parents, five brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her children, Mary, Gene and Lisa, Bernie and Charlie and Roni and Jerry; her grandchildren, Kate, Gene and Suzy, Sean and Annie; a great-grandson, Daniel; a great-granddaughter, Eva; and a step-great-granddaughter, Rhanna. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to call from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sts. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church, Grassflat.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sts. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church, Grassflat, with Father David A. Perry Jr., as celebrant. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Joseph Bulach Bower Sr., 78, of Allenwood, Pa., died Jan. 16, 2017. Born Aug. 22, 1938 in Williamsport, Pa., he was a son of the late John C. Bower Sr. and Mabel (Fague) Bower.

He was employed with Branch Motor Express and Watsontown Trucking as a truck driver for a total of 31 years and he traveled more than 4,000,000 miles. 

Mr. Bower graduated from Montgomery Area High School in 1955 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1955-1959. He was a member of the Niagara Masonic Lodge No. 375 for 50 years.

His joy in life was his family, spending time at sporting events, family functions, hunting and spending the winter months by the pool in the Florida sunshine.

He is survived by his spouse of 60 years, Connie (Klinger) Bower, to whom he was wed Aug. 9, 1956; two daughters, Jacqueline (Harry) Sampsell and Janette (Tim) Paquet; one son, Joseph Jr. (Hillary); 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret (Bud) Drick; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Bower.

Mr. Bower was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John C. Bower Jr; and a sister, Mary (Gene) Metzger.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 21 at the First Presbyterian Church, Walnut Street, in Milton, Pa. There will be a meal served after the memorial service at the church.

Family requests any contributions be made to the American Lung Association.

Stella Rose O’Dell, 88, of Clearfield died Monday, Jan. 16, 2017 at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield.

She was born Oct. 4, 1928 in Irvona, a daughter of the late George and Mary (Sheposh) Walushka.

Mrs. O’Dell was employed at Kurtz Bros. and retired after 17 years of service.  She was also involved with the Mercy Mission and the Marion House. 

She was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield.

She is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Plubell and her husband, Bob of Clearfield; two grandchildren, Robert A. Plubell and his wife, Ashley and Nicole Plubell; two great-grandsons, Jason and Archer Plubell; two sisters, Helen Karrer of Clearfield and Dorothy O’Conner of Athens; and three brothers, Peter Walushka of Wellsboro and John Walushka and James Walushka, both of Clearfield.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas ‘Jack’ O’Dell, on April 19, 2013.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jane Beach.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Monday at the Glad Tiding Assembly of God, Clearfield, with the Rev. Stephen DeSantis officiating. Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery, Clearfield.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Monday at the church.

Anthony Pasquariello, 72, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017 at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.

He was born Feb. 24, 1944 in Clearfield, a son of the late John and Frances (Puzzuto) Pasquariello.

Mr. Pasquariello served his country as a member of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his brother, Franklin Pasquariello and his wife, Rosa of Clearfield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Lee Pasquariello.

John R. “Jack” Newman, 85, of Treasure Lake, DuBois died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017 at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Born Sept. 11, 1931 in DuBois, he was the son of the late Anthony W. and Mary (Duda) Newman.

In 1961, he married Marla (Wiser) Newman.  She survives.

Mr. Newman was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served from 1957 to 1959. He retired as a teacher at St. Marys Area High School after 33 years of service.

He was a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church. 

Mr. Newman was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and the National Education Association.  He was an avid reader and woodworker.

He is survived by four children, Anthony J. Newman and his wife, Janet of Hollywood, Md., Barbara Ann Skraba and her husband, Ray of Ridgway, John M. Newman of Wilcox and Michael G. Newman of New York, NY. 

He is also survived by a brother, Thomas Newman of St. Marys and three grandchildren, Hannah, Jacob and Hunter Newman of Wilcox.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Newman and two brothers, William Newman and Robert Newman.

There will be no visitation.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. Richard Siefer as celebrant.

Burial will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery.

Elizabeth L. “Betty” Stanton, 87, of Philipsburg died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017 at her home.

Born Aug. 24, 1929 in Osceola Mills, she was the daughter of the late Harry I and Vera (Vaughn) Greenawalt. 

She married Harold C. Stanton on Aug. 29, 1970 in Port Matilda. He preceded her in death Nov. 5, 1994.

Mrs. Stanton was of the Christian faith.

She was retired from General Cigar; she also had worked at the Weis Market in Philipsburg.  She was a 1947 graduate of the former Philipsburg High School.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Mark K. Stanton; two sisters, Lois Walters and Maxine Romine; and one infant brother, Harry Greenawalt.

She is survived by three sons, Terry Carter and his wife, Rita of Fayetteville, NC and Stephen K. Staton and his wife, Susan and Delaun B. Stanton and his wife, Tammy, both of Philipsburg, and two sisters, Jean Leach and Joanne Herr, both of Philipsburg. 

She is also survived by six grandchildren, Cheryl and Terry Carter and Jason, Joel, Brian and Adam Stanton and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Osceola Mills with the Rev. LaMarr Pirkle officiating.  Burial will be at the Umbria Cemetery in Osceola Mills.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. Saturday until funeral time at the funeral home.

Dorothy C. Johnson, 72, of Houtzdale and formerly of Clearfield, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017 at UPMC Altoona.

She was born April 1, 1944 in McCartney, a daughter of the late Walter Ross and Marie (Fitzgerald) Johnson.

She was employed at Kent’s Sportswear for six years. She was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 812 Auxiliary. 

She is survived by her son, Paul Johnson of Houtzdale; three grandchildren, Taylor Caskey, Cassie Johnson and Steven Johnson; two brothers, Charles Johnson and his wife, Bonnie and Bernard Johnson and his wife, Carol; and two sisters, Patricia English and Doris Gelsick.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mike Manahan; four brothers, Forrest, Edward, C. Ross and Glenn Johnson; and four sisters, Grace Rubly, Lois Mae Gallaher, Jean Shubert and Winifred Narehood.

At Ms. Johnson’s request, there will be no services.

Jerusalem Jobe “Matthew” Burkett, 26, of DuBois died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017 at Penn Highlands DuBois.

Born March13, 1990 in Venango County, he was the son of Donald J. Burkett and Sharon L. Smith Burkett.  His father survives and his mother preceded him in death.

He was active in Special Olympics in bowling, basketball, track and field and soccer.  He liked “DJ’ing” and attending sporting events.

He is survived by a brother and a sister

There will be no public visitation. 

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home Inc. with Pastor Phil Colgan officiating.

Burial will be in Venango County.
