Obituary Notice: Alice Jane Benton

Alice Jane Benton, 80, of Karthaus died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015 at the Centre Crest Nursing Home, Bellefonte.

Born April 19, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Hilary A. and Stella Moore Picard.

Mrs. Benton was a homemaker. She had attended the Cooper Township High School.

She was a member of the Karthaus Fire Company Auxiliary, the Quehanna Lions Club, and the Frenchville VFW Ladies Auxiliary.  She loved children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was married to Charles M. Benton on Oct. 4, 1952 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Frenchville. He survives in Karthaus.

Mrs. Benton is survived by five daughters, Annette Salvanish and her husband, Paul of Clarence, Christine Stover and her husband, Richard of Muncy, Beverly Lidgett of Morrisdale, Yvonne Pickering and her husband, Matthew of Bellefonte and Victoria Shimmel of Newport, NC; two sons, Terrance Benton and his wife, Jackie of Pine Glen and Anthony Benton of Karthaus; and by her beloved cat, Abby.

She is survived by two sisters, Patricia Barger and her husband, Harold and Sandra Picard, both of Frenchville, and one brother, William Picard and his wife, Darlene of Morrisdale. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, Gregory, Wendy, Crystal, Anna, Adam, Rosanne, Sara, Tyler, Travis, Tara, Branden and Stephanie and 15 great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Wyatt, Alan, Caroline, Connor, Dale, Chase, Madison, Camryn, Emma, Alexis, Reese, Wesley and Aryanna.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Francis, Hilary Jr. and Robert Picard; one sister, Marjorie Mayhew; and one son-in-law, Wesley Lidgett Jr.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Strange & Weaver Funeral Service, Morrisdale, with Father Philip J. Billotte officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Memorial Cemetery, Karthaus.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. Friday until the time of services at the funeral home.

Donald S. Hartshorne Sr., 89, of Clearfield died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 at Penn Highlands Clearfield.

Mr. Hartshorne was born March 4, 1926, in Johnstown, the son of Albert E. and Josephine (Beck) Hartshorne.

He retired from American General Insurance after 38 years of service as a manager and auditor.

Mr. Hartshorne was a member of the Mount Joy United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post No. 6, the Clearfield B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 540 and the Clearfield S.O.I.

Mr. Hartshorne was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Betty B. (Blewitt) Hartshorne, to whom he was married April 29 1950 at the First Christian Church in New Castle.

He is survived by three children, Donald S. Hartshorne Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of West Sunbury, Jeffrey D. Hartshorne and his wife, Sally of Shippensburg and Beth H. Helsel and her husband, Rick of Clearfield; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jo Marie Perrine of Monroeville.

Mr. Hartshorne was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dorothy Roberts.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home Inc. of Clearfield with the Rev. Kenneth Leonard officiating.

Military honors will be accorded by the Clearfield Honor Guard. Burial will be at the Mount Joy Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. Thursday until the hour of services at the funeral home.

Donna C. Marshall, 80, of DuBois went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, surrounded by her loving family.

Born Jan. 16, 1935 in Grampian, she was the daughter of the late Harold “Tip” and Arlene (Wrigglesworth) Chelgren.

On July 29, 1956, she married Bill B. Marshall.  He survives.

She worked for Hughes-Starr Motors in DuBois for more than 20 years. Prior to that, she had worked for Bell Telephone.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the Church Chancel Choir.  She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She enjoyed her monthly card club and golfing.  She loved her cat, Dora, and working with her flowers.  Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by three daughters, Tammy Harris and her husband, Joel of Falls Creek, Brenda Marshall of State College and Valerie Marshall of Brockway; three sisters, Norma Alexiff of Raleigh, NC and Carole Dotts and Janet Kupko, both of DuBois; a brother, Harold “Whitey” Chelgren and his wife, Phyllis of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and six great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jill Spinda.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Lance Tucker officiating.

Burial will be in St. Luke’s United Church of Christ Cemetery.

Laura Beth (Shoemaker) Immel, 33, of Philipsburg died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015.

Born Dec. 2, 1981 in Clearfield, she was a daughter of Fred and Janet (Burket) Shoemaker, who survive of Philipsburg.

Ms. Immel attended the New Life Center in Philipsburg. She was an avid animal lover. She enjoyed working with and helping animals and had aspirations in becoming a veterinary technician. She was also very musically inclined.

She was a 2000 graduate of the Philipsburg-Osceola Area High School.

After graduating high school, she served in the U.S. Navy.  Upon her discharge from the Navy, she attended the Pennsylvania State University in State College and later graduated from Penn Tech in Williamsport as a pastry chef.

While at Penn Tech, she won the People’s Choice Award for the wedding cake competition.

Ms. Immel worked as a pastry chef in Williamsport and State College and later was the owner and operator of the Butter Me Up Bakery in Philipsburg in the later part of 2013.

She recently had been employed with the Handy Taxi Service in State College.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Amy Danielle Dalien and her husband, Patrick of Melville, NY and Dana Lee Shoemaker of Philipsburg; a nephew, Patrick Grayson Dalien of Melville, NY; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Private funeral services were held at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, Philipsburg, with the Rev. John T. Dill officiating. Burial followed at the Umbria Cemetery in Osceola Mills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, 719 E. Spruce St., Philipsburg, PA 16866, to help with funeral expenses.

Donna J. Boring, 77, of DuBois died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015 at Penn Highlands DuBois.

On Jan. 26, a cold wintery day in 1938, a red-haired baby girl was born to Harold Edwin and Donnabel Ruth (Smiley) Snyder and they named her Donna Jean.

She attended Sandy Schools and participated in most school activities.  In 1956, she graduated second in a class of 60 students.

Beginning immediately after high school, she worked in the office of Penn Traffic (Riverside Markets) for 13 years.

On May 19, 1957, she married her high school sweetheart, C. Ed Boring.  He survives.

They had three sons, Scott and his wife, Leonie, who lives and teaches in Saudi Arabia, and Eric and C.E. III, who preceded her in death.

She was an accountant by nature and enjoyed many levels of responsibility in the business world after attending the local campus of Penn State where she majored in business.

With three small children, she was a charter member and active in the DuBois Area Junior Women’s Club.  As a Junior Women’s Club project, she initiated and organized a day camp for handicapped children.

She was listed in the 1970 edition of Outstanding Young Women of America as the founder of Camp Confidence.

Even with three small children, she participated locally in many church, community and Parent-Teacher activities.  She had high ethical standards and enjoyed helping people anonymously.

When her children were grown, she was the first woman hired by the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue to audit corporation income taxes.  In that position, she traveled extensively throughout the United States.

When she retired from the state, she studied to become a local pastor with the United Methodist Church and a licensed minister with the United Church of Christ.

She pastored St. Luke’s/St. Peter’s United Church of Christ charge in DuBois for a year and St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Punxsutawney for seven years, as well as substituting in many area pulpits weekly.

She is survived by two grandchildren, Eric E. Boring Jr. and Miguel Boring. She is also survived by Eric’s wife, Cheryl Kurtz, and three younger siblings, Harold E. Snyder of San Diego, Calif., Carol Rafferty and her husband, Al of DuBois and Sandra Engle and her husband, Doug of Carlisle.

Her survivors also include an extended family of David, Li, Lucia and Emma Tsoi, who live in France.

As a personal but private dedication to her two deceased sons, she planned, solicited funding and landscaped the entrance to Morningside Cemetery where she will be interred.

There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 28 from Christ Lutheran Church with Pastor Miller officiating.

Ezra Joseph Bortot, infant son of Ashley Redden and Kristopher Bortot, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015 at the Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital.

Surviving are his parents of Clearfield, his brothers Rylen and Colton and his sister, Mikaila; his maternal grandparents, Fred and Jill Redden of Clearfield; his paternal grandmother, Tammy Bortot of Curwensville; and his paternal grandfather and grandmother, Gary and Lori Bortot of Curwensville.

Also surviving are his maternal great-grandparents, Robert Vokes Sr. and Bonnie Vokes of Clearfield and Fred and Icie Redden of New Millport; his paternal great-grandparents, Patricia and James Harner of Curwensville; and numerous loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandparents, Ruth and Ralph Bortot Sr.

A private memorial service to honor baby Ezra will be held by the family.

Carol L. Thompson, 69, of Philipsburg and formerly of Osceola Mills and Houtzdale, died Monday, Sept. 14, 2015 at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg.

Born Nov. 11, 1945 in Osceola Mills, she was a daughter of the late Andrew “Katz” and Catherine (Habasevich) Kisinkie.

Mrs. Thompson was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Osceola Mills.

She was a 1962 graduate of the Philipsburg-Osceola Area High School.

She had worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. She later was employed as a unit clerk with the Philipsburg Area Hospital. She was most currently employed with Pyramid Health Care of Altoona.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Alex John Thompson, and a sister, Mary Ann Simler.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by two daughters, Lisa Maines and her husband, Walter of Philipsburg and Stephanie Kopchik and her husband, Mark of Philipsburg and two sons, Patrick Thompson and his wife, Amy of Morrisdale and John Thompson and his wife, Angie of Woodland.

She is survived by a sister, Janet Flegal of Altoona. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Lindsy Maines of Philipsburg; Parkar and Camden Kopchik of Philipsburg; Brittany Thompson and her fiancé, Shane Yarger of Kylertown; Nicholas Thompson of Morrisdale; Madisyn and Makenzie Thompson of Woodland; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Osceola Mills, with the Rev. Robert J. Horgas as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Osceola Mills.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, Philipsburg. The rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Ellen S. Bambarger, 90, of Osceola Mills died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015 at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College.

Born Sept. 10, 1925 in Morrisdale, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Maude (Quick) Roach.

She married Winfield H. Bambarger on July 8, 1943 in Morrisdale. He preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 2002.

Mrs. Bambarger was a member of the Osceola Mills United Methodist Church and retired from General Cigar.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Baby Jean, Nora Belle, Harriet, Betty and Alice and one brother, Pat.

Mrs. Bambarger is survived by five daughters, Sandy Malinich and her husband, Leroy of Hyde, Cheryl Miller and her husband, Melvin, Nancy Harris and her husband, Gregory and Amy Phillips and her husband, Jerry, all of Osceola Mills, and Joan Jozefick and her husband, Robert of Grassflat.

She is also survived by a sister, Kathryn Mehallow of Hawk Run; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Osceola Mills, with the Rev. Jennifer Heikes officiating.  Burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery in Morrisdale.

Donald C. Smith, 72, a resident of the Hearthside Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, State College, and formerly of Philipsburg, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015 at the center.

Born Jan. 1, 1943 in Philipsburg, he was a son of the late Clair and Lenore (Jackson) Smith. He was affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by a sister, Janet Korinchak of Garwood, NJ; a brother-in-law, Wayne Archer of Houtzdale; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Patricia Archer.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday at the David K. Dahlgren Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Versaw officiating. Burial will be in the Umbria Cemetery, Osceola Mills.

Rick R. Cowfer Jr., 42, of Clearfield died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015 at his home.

He was born Nov. 16, 1972 in Philipsburg, the son of Rickey Ray Sr. and Deborah Jean (Saggese) Cowfer.

Mr. Cowfer was employed by Wal-Mart of Clearfield, where he worked in the meat department for 20 years.

He was a born again Christian. He was a member of Clearfield Fundamental Bible Church.

He was a graduate of West Branch Area High School in the class of 1993. He was an avid Penn State and Atlanta Braves fan.

Mr. Cowfer is survived by his wife, Wendy L. (Rittenhouse) Cowfer, to whom he was married April 24, 1999 at Riverview Bible Church.

He is survived by his parents, Rickey Ray Sr. and Deborah Jean Cowfer of Curwensville; his maternal grandmother, Florence “Jane” Leforte of Shiloh; a sister, Tracy Cowfer of Curwensville; a brother; Russell Cowfer of Curwensville; two nieces, Alivia and Rebecca Cowfer; and a nephew, Dominick Cowfer. He is also survived by his beloved Shih Tzu, Lexie.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Frank Saggese, and his paternal grandparents, Russell and Helen Cowfer.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home Inc. with Pastor Michael Polzella officiating. Burial will be in Crown Crest Memorial Park.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. Tuesday until the hour of service at the funeral home.

June H. Minarchick, 91, of Philipsburg died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015 at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg.

Born May 27, 1924 in Morrisdale, she was a daughter of the Late Clyde P. and Cora A. (Glotfelty) Carr.

Mrs. Minarchick was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Philipsburg, where she had also been a member of the funeral choir.

She had been employed with the General Cigar Company Inc. of Philipsburg until her retirement.

On Sept. 28, 1946 in Hawk Run, she married John A. Minarchick, who preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1994.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Pearl Desso, Helen Metz and an infant sister, Videll Carr and eight brothers, Boyd, Blaine, Marlyn, Chester, Joseph, Robert, Luther and infant Frederick Carr.  She was the last of her generation.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn M. Trimpey of Philipsburg and Sharon A. Dance and her husband, Donald of Port Matilda; a son, James A. Minarchick and his wife, Tammy of Philipsburg; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Philipsburg, with the Rev. John Gibbons as celebrant.  Burial will follow at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Philipsburg.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, Philipsburg.  The rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a vigil service conducted at 5:30 p.m., both on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Brenda L. Cessna, 55, of Penfield died suddenly and unexpectedly while peacefully sleeping in her home Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015.

Born April 5, 1960 in DuBois, she was the daughter of Bernard Ankeny and Margaret (Jones) Kengersky.  Her mother survives her and lives in Falls Creek.

On Oct. 27, 1979, she married her husband, Craig B. Cessna, who survives.

She is survived by two sons, Brandon and Kyle (Zack) Cessna, both of Penfield; her brother, Robin Ankeny of Falls Creek; and her sister, Toni Clark and her husband, Greg of Plantation, Fla.  She is survived by one granddaughter, Miss Addison Lee Cessna.

She worked part-time at Paris Uniform in DuBois. She also worked full-time as chief assistant to her husband over the course of their numerous projects together over the years.

There will be no visitation.  A private memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

George F. Vail Jr., 60, of Philipsburg died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015 at Kylertown.

Born Nov. 4, 1954 in Fort Riley, Kan., he was a son of Madeline Jean (Scott) Vail of Philipsburg and the late George F. Vail Sr.

He was a 1974 graduate of Philipsburg High School. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve.

Mr. Vail was of the Methodist faith. He had been a long haul truck driver from 1975 to 2013. He drove for numerous trucking companies, including Shaffer and most recently, Tim Bainey Trucking.

He was a member of the Clearfield Mooseriders, the Clearfield Moose Lodge No. 97, the Curwensville Moose Lodge No. 268 and the Philipsburg VFW Louis P. Jenkins Post No. 3450. He was also a former member of Hope Fire Company No 2.

He enjoyed riding motorcycles, restoring vehicles and spending time with his family. He was an avid fan of Penn State football and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son, Tyler Vail of State College; two daughters, Jamie Stanton and her husband, Joel of Philipsburg and Courtney Kowach and her husband, David of State College; and a granddaughter, Mia Kowach.

He is also survived by two brothers, Robert E. Vail Sr. and his wife, Amy of Houtzdale and Mark E. Vail of Kill Devil Hills, NC; an aunt, Joan Peters and her husband, Calvin of Wallaceton; seven nieces and nephews, Robert E. Vail Jr., Seth Vail, Shelby Vail, Curt Vail, Dennis Myers Jr., Shawn Myers and Brittany Myers; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; his paternal grandparents, George O. and Nancy (Vaughn) Vail; his maternal grandparents, Robert G. and Anna Mae (Beatty) Scott; and an aunt, Mildred Darmiento.

A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Vail’s life will be held at a later date and time.

Anna Sawyer, 90, formerly of Thompsontown, LaJose, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015 at Ridgeview Elder Care and Rehabilitation Center, Curwensville.

Born Jan. 19, 1925 in Urey, she was the daughter of George and Annie (Hook) Bakaysa She married James Sawyer, who died in 1963.

Mrs. Sawyer was a homemaker.

She is survived by her son- and daughter-in-law, James Sawyer and his wife, Michelle; her son-in-law, Martin Rydbom; her grandson, Adam Rydbom and his wife, Joni; her granddaughter, Sarah Rydbom; her grandson, Aaron Sawyer; her great-granddaughters, Ava Weld and Sarah Weld; her great-grandson, Jace Weld; and her brother, Frank Bakaysa, all of Coalport, and her sister, Susan Patrick of Mentor, Ohio

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Anna Marie Rydbom and five brothers, Mike Bakaysa, George Bakaysa, Andy Bakaysa, John Bakaysa and Charlie Bakaysa.

Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Lloyd-Dimmick Funeral Home Inc., Irvona.

Panikhida service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Fr. David Lewis officiating.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Michael’s Orthodox Church, Irvona, with Fr. David Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Watts Cemetery.

B. Daryl   Kitchen, 87, of Westover died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015 at Miners Medical Center, Hastings.

Born March 12, 1928 in Patton, she was the daughter of William and Henrietta (Mitchell) Williams. She married Arthur Kitchen, who died Oct. 12, 2006

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Westover Baptist Church.

Mrs. Kitchen was survived by a daughter, Leta Brink; a son, Larry Kitchen; a granddaughter, Megan Kephart and her husband, Matt; a grandson, Scott Brink; a granddaughter, Brandi Kitchen, all of Westover; and a sister, Alberta Lenglet of Forest Hill, Md.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. Thursday at the Lloyd-Dimmick Funeral Home Inc., Irvona.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Westover Cemetery.

Betty L. Demchak, 92, of Sandy Ridge went home with her Lord surrounded by her loving family on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015.

Born June 3, 1923 in Sandy Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Vinton and Lovenia (Mills) Riggleman.  She married George A. “Dave” Demchak on March 14, 1941 in Wheeling, W.Va.; he preceded her in death on May 17, 2005.

Mrs. Demchak was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Sandy Ridge, where she was very active with the children’s church.  She was a homemaker and her biggest joys were her grandchildren and her church.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Herschel Riggleman.

Mrs. Demchak is survived by two daughters, Betty Lou Croyle of Sandy Ridge and Marthetta Garner of Richmond, Va., and a son, George V. Demchak and his wife, Joanne of Mifflintown.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Clayton Croyle, Danielle Thurston, David Croyle, Wade Croyle, Stephanie Garner, Loren Garner, Marthetta Garner, Kelly Garner and Sharon Walton and eight great-grandchildren.

The service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Osceola Mills, with Jennifer C. Heikes officiating.  Burial will be in the Philipsburg Cemetery in Philipsburg.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Joseph James Gavlock Jr., 43, of Clearfield died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2015 as the result of a pedestrian-vehicle accident in Lawrence Township.

He was born Jan. 12, 1972 in Clearfield, the son of Joseph James Gavlock Sr. and Patty A. (Lucas) Livergood.

Mr. Gavlock Jr. had worked for various construction companies. He was affiliated with the Clearfield Alliance Church.

Mr. Gavlock Jr. is survived by his mother, Patty A. Livergood of Clearfield; his former wife, Mandy L. Martin of Clearfield; and four children, Joseph James Gavlock III, Johnathan Andrew Gavlock, Madison Elizabeth Gavlock and Noah Daniel Gavlock, all of Clearfield.

He is also survived by a brother, Shawn McGonigal of Clearfield; his companion, Linda Collier of Punxsutawney; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph James Gavlock Sr.; his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Kitty Gavlock; his maternal grandparents, Perry and Pearl Passmore; his great-grandmother, Virginia Bumbarger; a special aunt and uncle, John and Carol Rauch; and his best friend, Jason Merrit.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bennett & Houser Funeral Home, with Dr. Duane White officiating. Burial will be in the Centre Cemetery, Hyde.

Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Friday and from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

L. Albert Hubler, 97, of Clearfield and formerly of Woodland, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015. He was born in Clearfield, a son of the late Luther M. and Alice (Bolton) Hubler.

Mr. Hubler retired from County National Bank in 1980 with more than 30 years of service.

A graduate of Clearfield Schools in 1936, he had been a member of the First Church of Christ Scientists, Boston, and since has attended the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, Woodland, and most recently, The Presbyterian Church, Clearfield.

He had been a past member of the United Commercial Travelers, Philipsburg Council Number 621, since 1951 and the Clearfield Kiwanis Club.

He served as Clearfield Borough auditor and councilman for several years and with the Clearfield Area School Board for more than eight years.

He was an active member of the Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and also Community Action, both in Clearfield and Centre County. He was also involved with the Clearfield Area United Way.

Mr. Hubler was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II on the USS Roche Destroyer Escort.

Above all else, he will be remembered as a loving, family-oriented man.

He is survived by six children, James Hubler and his wife, Maria of Cherry Hill, NJ, Barbara A. Kurtz and her husband, Randy of St. Marys, Mary Lou Wilson and her husband, Bill of Woodland and Nancy J. Aughinbaugh and her husband, Bob, Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Hubler and Margaret ‘Meg’ Neeper and her husband, Breck, all of Clearfield; several grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha M. (Harmic) Lansberry Hubler.

He was also preceded in death by first wife, Mary Lucena (Jackson) Hubler in 1979 and to whom he was wed in 1941; a son, Jan C. Hubler; two grandchildren; three brothers, Henry ‘Jack’, Calvin and Arthur Hubler; and three sisters, Ella M Barr, Dorothy Temple and Marie Milliron.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday Oct. 11 at The Presbyterian Church, Clearfield.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Clearfield Penn Highlands Hospice, P.O. Box 992, Clearfield.

Richard L. Harper, 91, of Clearfield died Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015 at Penn Highlands Clearfield Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born Sept. 7, 1924, he was the son of Lewis and Ruth (Bloom) Harper.

Mr. Harper retired from the Clearfield Cheese Co. in Curwensville. He had also worked with his father in the Harper Mines located in Hepburnia.

He was a 1942 graduate of the Clearfield Area High School. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the Paratroopers 101st Airborne of the 501st Parachute Infantry.

He participated in the D-Day Invasion. He was wounded in Holland, and received a Purple Heart along with two Bronze Stars.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 6 and the Trinity United Methodist Church in Clearfield. He loved his garden and always had a large harvest, which he would can and preserve.  He also loved hunting and fishing and was an avid sports fan.

On Aug. 4, 1947 in the Trinity United Methodist Church of Clearfield, he wed the former Beatrice Grice. She survives.

He is survived by four sons and a daughter,  James Harper and his wife, Ann, Walter Harper and his wife, Gail, Thomas Harper and Mary Ann Condon and her husband, Talon, all of Clearfield, and Lewis Harper and his wife, Pat of Corning, NY.

Also surviving are five grandchildren, Aimee McGarry and her husband, Cameron of Curwensville, Becky Michael and her husband, Aaron of LaJose, Brent Harper of New York City, Andrew Harper and Kristin Meckes and her husband, Ryan, both of Corning, NY, and four great-grandchildren, Remmington and Abbey McGarry and Gunnar and Connor Michael.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty Pillot and Monabelle Frontino; and two grandchildren, Matt Harper and Elyse Condon.

At the request of Mr. Harper, there will be no public visitation or services.

The family suggests contributions be made to either The Nathaniel Yingling Cancer Center, 815 Doctors Dr., Clearfield, PA 16830, or the Trinity United Methodist Church, 121 S. Second St., Clearfield, PA 16830.

Brody Rebel Kay, infant, of DuBois died Monday, Sept. 21, 2015 at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Born Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015 in DuBois, he was the son of Dane Kay and Deana Marsh.

He is survived by his paternal grandfather, David Kay of DuBois and his maternal grandparents, Robert and Terry Marsh of DuBois and a step-brother, Jackson Kay.

Private family services were held from Beulah Cemetery in Reynoldsville, with Pastor David Bish officiating.
